Proud of the Vietnamese Ao Dai

Việt NamViệt Nam28/02/2025

In response to the "Ao Dai Week" in 2025 (from March 1st to 8th, 2025) to celebrate the 115th anniversary of International Women's Day (March 8th, 1910 - March 8th, 2025) and the 1985th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung Uprising, women's associations at all levels in the province have intensified their efforts to promote and encourage female cadres, members, civil servants, teachers, and young women to wear ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) at work, in accordance with their conditions and professional characteristics, ensuring convenience and workplace safety. In particular, a mass wearing of ao dai on March 8th aims to showcase the beauty of the ao dai in the workplace and in their living spaces, contributing to highlighting the elegant and gentle beauty of Vietnamese women.

Reporters from Hung Yen Newspaper responded.
Reporters from Hung Yen Newspaper participate in "Ao Dai Week".

In response to the "Ao Dai Week" in 2025, along with propaganda and mobilization efforts, many women's associations have built and maintained the "Women's Ao Dai Wardrobe" model, with hundreds of ao dai sets contributed and supported by officials, members, and philanthropists. Through this "Women's Ao Dai Wardrobe" model, rural women members can borrow outfits for free and freely choose ao dai that suit their preferences and figures. Ms. Bui Thi Xuan, from Phuong Nam commune (Hung Yen city), shared: "Due to difficult family circumstances, I don't have the means to have a new ao dai made. Every time I attend women's association meetings or weddings, seeing other women wearing beautiful ao dai makes me wish I had one. The 'Women's Ao Dai Wardrobe' model is very practical; I and many other women are very happy to be able to choose a beautiful ao dai that fits our figure and age." I believe that "Ao Dai Week" is a meaningful and practical activity that gives every woman the opportunity to wear the traditional Ao Dai with national pride.

For Ms. Bui Thi Dung, a teacher at Phu Cu High School (Phu Cu district), the ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) is worn by her and many female colleagues when the school organizes collective activities such as: International Women's Day (March 8th); Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20th); Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20th)... Ms. Dung said: "For me, wearing the traditional ao dai is a joy and a source of happiness. The flowing ao dai enhances the graceful beauty, reflecting the virtues of diligence, beauty, speech, and conduct in modern times for women. Wearing the ao dai in the workplace during 'Ao Dai Week' showcases the elegant and gentle beauty of women in the workplace."

More than just a traditional national costume, the ao dai is also a special image in cultural diplomacy , connecting Vietnam with friends around the world. Ms. Nguyen Thi Vuong, from Le Xa commune (Tien Lu district), currently living and working in the Russian Federation, shared: "When living far from home, the ao dai is not just clothing but carries sacred meaning, a source of pride. The ao dai 'awakens' memories of my homeland. No matter where I live and work, I am always proud to be Vietnamese, proud of our long-standing cultural traditions. Therefore, abroad, I always wear the traditional ao dai on important occasions so that international friends can see a beautiful cultural aspect, a Vietnamese soul always hướng towards the homeland. Not only me, but the Vietnamese community abroad often chooses the ao dai on important occasions as an affirmation of identity and national roots."

Over time, the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) is no longer the traditional short-skirt, high-collared dress. It has been modernized with many colors and styles, making the wearer feel more confident while still maintaining modesty, femininity, and grace. Perhaps that's why the ao dai is chosen as a uniform by many organizations and institutions. Many tourists choose the ao dai as a unique souvenir representing the image of Vietnam and its people. Proud of the beauty and cultural value of the ao dai, Vietnamese women in general, and women in Hung Yen in particular, have been preserving, promoting, and honoring the beauty of the traditional ao dai in many important family, clan, and community events, as well as during major national holidays. This further enhances the elegant and graceful beauty of Vietnamese women, leaving a positive impression on people at home and international friends.
