From today onwards, don't trust screenshots.

OpenAI's GPT Image 2 can create screenshots, transfer histories, and celebrity photos so realistic that they are indistinguishable from real people, sparking a wave of fake news on social media.

A screenshot of a news article with the headline "Xishanju game company dissolved, games to be resold" circulated in dozens of Chinese chat groups. This was completely fake news, created using GPT Image 2 in less than a minute. It's just one of a series of examples showing how OpenAI's latest image generation model is completely changing how we perceive the trustworthiness of images on the internet.

For the past three years, AI image creation models have consistently faced a major weakness: text, especially in languages other than English. While AI can create beautiful images, the text within the images is often meaningless or jumbled, allowing users to immediately recognize them as fake. GPT Image 2 has completely eliminated this weakness.

With just a descriptive sentence and no reference images, GPT Image 2 creates a complete bank transfer history with full details, account number, recipient name, transaction date and time, and the standard format of real-world banking applications. Phone interfaces, social media posts, and app notifications are all perfectly reproduced, even without sample images.

The real impact was immediate. Xiaomi's communications department had to issue a statement denying a series of fake photos created by AI, including one of Apple CEO Tim Cook "signing a partnership agreement with Xiaomi." CEOs and leaders of large companies became the most frequent targets of fake images because their faces appear in full on television and social media, allowing AI to recreate them more accurately than ordinary people.

The pace of AI image creation in the three and a half years since ChatGPT launched shows an incredible leap forward. From being unable to write letters, create accurate hand gestures, or produce seemingly artificial human figures, AI has progressed to a point where it has almost no weaknesses that can be detected by the naked eye.

In this context, the tendency to be skeptical of every screenshot received via text message is becoming a necessary skill.
