Rockstar Games has sparked intense debate among the global tech and gaming communities by announcing the complete removal of traditional Blu-ray discs from the physical box edition of the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI).
Instead, buyers of this version will only receive a plastic box containing a code to download the game themselves via the online store. This decision marks a major turning point in the digital entertainment industry.
The main reason cited by analysts is the need for absolute security for the product. Producing and shipping millions of game discs to retailers before the release date always carries a high risk of data leakage.
By using online activation codes, the publisher can have complete control over when players access the game. Additionally, this helps parent company Take-Two save on disc printing and logistics costs.

However, this move faced strong opposition from fans because it diminished the collectible value. At the same time, the game's enormous size, estimated to exceed 150 GB, would be a significant burden for those with limited internet access or bandwidth restrictions. Having to download all the data from the cloud worried many gamers with devices that had low-capacity hard drives.
Besides concerns about file size, the game's price has also caused a stir. The standard version of GTA VI costs $79.99 , a $10 increase compared to the average price of current AAA games. The price increase, coupled with the reduction in physical discs, has been criticized by many players as excessive profit-driven behavior on the part of the publisher. Users argue they are paying more but receiving less value.
In fact, Rockstar Games isn't the only one taking this step. Before them, popular titles like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora also adopted the "empty box containing download code" method or required an internet connection to install. This trend clearly reflects the shift in the entire entertainment market.
"The gaming industry is shifting entirely to digital, and Rockstar's decision will accelerate this process," said a market analyst.
The events of GTA VI suggest that the era of plastic game discs is drawing to a close. The game is scheduled for release on November 19th on next-generation consoles.
