'Tuchel has caused dissatisfaction among English players'

Former player and commentator Roy Keane believes that striker Ivan Toney seems angry with manager Thomas Tuchel's personnel decisions.

Ivan Toney seems unhappy with coach Tuchel.

In the early hours of June 11th, the England team left City Ground to boos from the crowd after losing 1-3 to Senegal in a friendly match. Toney, who scored 30 goals for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League last season, only came on as a substitute in the 88th minute.

Roy Keane believes the former Brentford star has every right to be unhappy, as he was benched for the entire match when England won 1-0 against Andorra on June 8th. Keane commented on ITV : “If you were Toney and only got to play 3-5 minutes, you would be furious. Tuchel’s player selection decisions are problematic and easily lead to dissatisfaction.”

Echoing Keane's sentiment, former England striker Ian Wright said: "I was surprised Toney wasn't brought on earlier, especially when Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers were the preferred choices despite the team playing poorly and needing a goal. If I were Toney, I would be very disappointed."

When asked about his decision to use Toney, Tuchel explained: “First of all, there were more than three minutes left in the game. I consider Ivan to be an expert in special situations, when we create many chances with Gibbs-White, Eze, Rogers, and Bellingham. He is strongest when the team delivers many crosses into the opponent's penalty area, so after 80 minutes, I was preparing to bring Ivan on. But at that point, the goal was disallowed, so the time for the substitution was extended.”

Tuchel added: “I think it was too early to bring Ivan on before the 80th minute. We wanted to play with Rogers, who is more versatile and stronger. The game was too intense, the opponent was very strong, and we didn't move the ball close enough to the goal to take advantage of Ivan's strengths. He needed to be closer to the penalty area to utilize his finishing experience, but at that point the game was too open, the team needed different types of players.”

Ronaldo's moment of brilliance: In the early hours of June 9th, Ronaldo scored the equalizer, making it 2-2 and paving the way for Portugal's 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout of the 2024/25 Nations League final.
