'Tuchel makes English players dissatisfied'

Former footballer and pundit Roy Keane believes striker Ivan Toney appears to be angry with manager Thomas Tuchel's decision to use his players.

Ivan Toney seems unhappy with coach Tuchel.

In the early hours of June 11, England left the City Ground to boos from the crowd after losing 1-3 to Senegal in a friendly match. Toney, who scored 30 goals for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League last season, only came on as a substitute in the 88th minute.

Roy Keane believes the former Brentford star has every right to be unhappy, having been on the bench for the entire game as the Three Lions won 1-0 against Andorra on June 8. Keane told ITV : “If you were Toney and you only got three or five minutes, you would be very angry. Tuchel’s decision to use players is problematic, it can easily cause dissatisfaction.”

Echoing Keane’s view, former England striker Ian Wright said: “I was surprised that Toney wasn’t brought on early, especially when Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers were given priority when the team were playing badly and needed goals. If I were Toney, I would be very disappointed.”

Asked about his decision to bring on Toney, Tuchel explained: “First of all, there were more than three minutes left. I consider Ivan a specialist in special situations, when we create a lot of chances with Gibbs-White, Eze, Rogers and Bellingham. He is at his best when the team is pouring a lot of balls into the opponent’s penalty area, so after 80 minutes, I was ready to bring him on. But at that moment, the goal was cancelled, so the time for the substitution was extended.”

Tuchel added: “I think it was too early to bring Ivan on before the 80th minute. We wanted to play with Rogers, who is more flexible and stronger. The match was too intense, the opponent was very strong, and we did not circulate the ball close enough to the goal to take advantage of Ivan's strengths. He needs to be close to the penalty area to use his finishing experience, but the match was too open, the team needed other types of players."

Ronaldo's shining moment In the early morning of June 9, Ronaldo scored the equalizer 2-2, creating the premise for Portugal's 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout of the 2024/25 Nations League final.
