Real Madrid are looking for a new manager after a disappointing season under Alvaro Arbeloa. In this context, Mourinho has emerged as a leading candidate for the hot seat at the Bernabeu. This is a likely outcome given his support from President Florentino Perez.
The 63-year-old manager leads Benfica under a contract until June 2027, having taken office last September. According to Portuguese media, Mourinho's contract includes a release clause worth €3 million. This could pave the way for a reunion with Real Madrid.
However, Benfica is not worried and is planning for the 2026/27 season with Mourinho at its center. Nevertheless, Benfica is also preparing a contingency plan. In case Mourinho leaves, the name being considered is Marco Silva. The 48-year-old strategist's contract with Fulham expires in the summer of 2026, making him a viable option.
According to regulations, Mourinho's release clause can be activated within 10 days of the final match of the season. Benfica concludes their campaign with a clash against Estoril Praia on May 16th, meaning the future of "The Special One" could be decided between the beginning and end of May.
Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning three titles, most notably the 2011/12 La Liga championship with a record number of points. However, the Champions League remains an unfulfilled trophy for him at the Bernabeu.
