UEFA is being lenient with Rashford.

VnExpressVnExpress25/11/2023

The European Football Federation (UEFA) has imposed the lowest possible ban on Marcus Rashford following his direct red card in the Copenhagen - Man Utd Champions League match.

On November 24th, UEFA announced that Rashford would only be banned for one match. The announcement stated that the Manchester United striker only committed a violent foul, rather than an intentional one, against Elias Jelert. If a direct red card had occurred in the Premier League, Rashford could have been banned for three matches.

This season, Rashford has only scored one goal in 16 games across all competitions. His tally has dropped significantly compared to his 30 goals in 56 games last season, when he was at his peak form at Man Utd.

In the 42nd minute of the Copenhagen - Man Utd match on November 8th, Rashford missed a challenge and stepped on Jelert's ankle. Immediately afterwards, referee Donatas Rumsas showed a direct red card to Man Utd's number 10. Playing with ten men put the English team at a disadvantage. From a 2-0 lead, Man Utd conceded an equalizer in injury time of the first half. After the break, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to make it 3-2. However, the numerical advantage still helped Copenhagen secure three points. In the 83rd and 87th minutes, Lukas Lerager and Roony Bardghji respectively scored to give the Danish team a 4-3 comeback victory.

Rashford will miss Manchester United's away match against Galatasaray at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on November 29th. He will return for the final group stage game against Bayern Munich on December 12th.

Man Utd currently sit bottom of Group A in the Champions League, with three points from four matches. Their only win was against Copenhagen 1-0 in the first leg, while they lost to Bayern 3-4, Galatasaray 2-3, and Copenhagen in the second leg.

In their next match, a win away at Galatasaray could see Man Utd move up to second place. After that, they will have to battle it out at home against Bayern, who have already secured qualification for the next round as group winners. Finishing third in the group would see Man Utd drop into the Europa League. Finishing last would see Erik Ten Hag's team eliminated from European competition.

In the 2020-2021 season, Man Utd also finished third in their Champions League group behind PSG and Leipzig. But after dropping down to the Europa League, they reached the final and only lost to Villarreal on penalties.
