Venice streets flooded by high tide
AFP news agency today, August 1, quoted UNESCO's announcement that the city of Venice faces the risk of irreversible destruction due to many causes, including climate change and overcrowding by tourists.
The proposal will be presented and considered for approval at a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, in September.
"The effects of long-term degradation due to human intervention, including continued urban development, the impacts of climate change and the influx of tourists threaten to cause irreversible changes to Venice's outstanding universal value assets," according to UNESCO.
"A number of outstanding issues have caused deterioration of the site's inherent character," UNESCO said, warning that projects such as high-rise buildings were having a significant negative impact on the landscape.
"In addition, the combined effects of human and natural changes are causing degradation and damage to built structures and urban areas," UNESCO warned.
While Venice is under threat, the Italian government has made little progress in addressing these issues, further hampered by a lack of overall strategic vision.
The World Heritage Committee, which oversees the global World Heritage labeling process, is scheduled to meet in Riyadh from September 10-25.
On this occasion, the Committee also considered 53 potential sites that could be added to the World Heritage List this year.
