To ensure the quality of school lunch programs for students, some localities in Ho Chi Minh City have implemented solutions and requirements to manage and supervise the organization of these programs in schools.
Many solutions are being proposed to manage school lunch programs.
Strengthen inspection and supervision of school lunch programs.
On November 25th, the Department of Education and Training of District 7 (Ho Chi Minh City) issued guidelines to schools regarding strengthening measures to prevent food poisoning during school lunch programs.
Accordingly, the District 7 Department of Education and Training requires all schools from preschool to junior high school to improve food safety measures, including preventing food poisoning. They must effectively monitor and prevent food poisoning, minimizing the risk of food poisoning in schools.
Specifically, Mr. Ha Thanh Hai, Deputy Head of the Education and Training Department of District 7, said that the district will strengthen inspection and supervision of educational institutions to promptly detect risks of food poisoning, and provide information and warnings about the risks of food poisoning caused by microorganisms and natural toxins (especially natural toxins found in food such as toads, poisonous mushrooms, pufferfish...).
Implement measures to prevent, stop, and address food safety incidents, especially preventing food poisoning risks, in educational institutions; coordinate with relevant units to regularly monitor and inspect the implementation at educational institutions with collective kitchens and food service establishments for students; minimize the risk of food poisoning from school meals.
To ensure student safety, the District 7 Department of Education and Training requires all schools to develop plans and strategies for preventing, mitigating, and resolving food safety incidents; minimizing the risk of food poisoning. Schools are also required to strengthen inspection and supervision at their facilities to promptly detect food poisoning risks, provide information, and issue warnings about potential food poisoning risks. Furthermore, schools must coordinate with the district health center and ward health stations in inspecting and monitoring food poisoning risks within their respective institutions.
Images of students' daily school lunches will be made public.
Video surveillance of school lunch meals for students.
The Go Vap District Department of Education and Training has integrated the implementation of real-life images of school lunch meals into its educational quality management software during the development of the Smart Education Operations Center to monitor and prevent food poisoning in school lunch meals.
Specifically, according to the head of the Go Vap District Department of Education and Training, with the application of management software, the Department will manage the updating of school lunch menus for each school. At the same time, they will be able to view live images of the food portions for each student's meal.
Mr. Duong Tri Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the city currently has more than 2,400 schools, and the demand for boarding school programs from parents in Ho Chi Minh City is quite high. However, school administrators are not specialists in food safety and hygiene; they only perform state management duties, including this aspect.
Based on this reality, the leaders of the Department of Education and Training stated that every year, the department collaborates with relevant units to organize training courses and update information on food safety and hygiene management to ensure the quality of school lunch programs. In addition, the leaders of the Department of Education and Training believe that more tools are needed to improve the effectiveness of controlling the quality of meals for students.
Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety, expressed her agreement with the proposal from the leaders of the Department of Education and Training to research additional tools for schools to self-inspect and assess the quality of food hygiene and safety at their institutions.
