Applying STEM to life

In recent years, STEM education activities integrated into each lesson have provided students in Da Lat City with the knowledge and skills necessary for their participation in experiential activities and scientific research. The innovative STEM and robotics projects created by students, highly valued for their practical applications, have become vivid evidence of the success of STEM education in Da Lat City.

The STEM Festival is a healthy playground that stimulates group learning, encourages students' creativity, and applies scientific research to real-life situations. In its third year, the Da Lat City STEM Festival has seen a notable increase in both the quantity and quality of STEM videos and creative products submitted by students.

This year, the event attracted the participation of 715 students from 40 primary and secondary schools. In the STEM video category, most entries authentically documented the process of organizing STEM educational activities at their respective schools, clearly conveying the goals, content, and educational value of these activities. In the STEM product competition, participating schools demonstrated a serious and positive attitude; many products were developed based on practical teaching problems, closely linked to the specific needs and learning environment of the students. Some products showed meticulous preparation, both in content and presentation.

Ms. Tang Thi Hang - Deputy Head of the Education and Training Department and Head of the Judging Panel - assessed that many products clearly demonstrated a high level of scientific knowledge, showing the students' ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge... In the robotics competition, the students showed quite good programming skills, knowing how to flexibly apply the knowledge they had learned to solve the requirements of the exam. The competing teams had serious preparation, investing systematically in the design and assembly of robots. Many robots operated effectively, meeting the technical requirements and content of the exam well...

At the primary school level, the winning STEM projects included models of wind farms, mini vacuum cleaners, and ecosystem models. At the secondary school level, projects such as the "Infinite Spinning Disc for a Green Earth"; robots for transporting supplies in schools and hospitals; and models depicting famous landmarks and human life in Da Lat were among the most popular. It's evident that most of this year's STEM projects utilize technology to promote a green, safe, and sustainable future.

“My family and I went on a field trip to Cau Dat, and when I asked about the giant wind turbines, my parents explained that they were wind turbines – one of the green energy sources, created by wind power and very environmentally friendly. The books I studied also talked about wind energy, and from that, I came up with the idea and, together with my teacher and classmates, built a model applying wind power to daily life,” shared Tran Quoc Gia Minh, a student from Trung Vuong Primary School, about his project. The project won first prize from the judging panel. For the students, this is a great source of encouragement, demonstrating their ability to apply knowledge from science and technology to solve real-life problems. One of the things that impressed the judges was that, despite their young age, the students confidently and fluently presented their projects and clearly answered questions.

According to Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hien, Head of the Department of Education and Training, this year, with the theme AI & STEM - A Launchpad for Creativity, Connecting the Future, students are given ample opportunity to be creative. This is an extremely suitable time for students to access AI in all fields and professions, not just in scientific and technical products. It is also an opportunity for students to participate in and experience interesting scientific activities, apply their knowledge to practice, and develop boldness and self-confidence, thereby fostering the qualities and abilities of students to meet the goals of the 2018 General Education Program.

In recent years, the Education Department of Da Lat City has paid great attention to STEM education activities in the area. STEM education activities organized in each lesson have helped students acquire knowledge and skills that serve as a foundation for them to participate in STEM activities at a higher level, namely experiential learning and scientific research. STEM is not only an educational method, but also a key to unlocking a treasure trove of knowledge, fostering creativity, and developing essential skills for 21st-century citizens, thereby helping them master technology and build their future.
