Ung Hoang Phuc: 'I'm still in high demand, my time isn't over yet'

VnExpressVnExpress26/02/2024

Singer Ung Hoang Phuc said that after 23 years of singing, despite experiencing many ups and downs in his career, he has still maintained his reputation and is in high demand for shows.

- How was your work at the beginning of the year?

- On the second day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon), I had shows everywhere. I also finished recording four songs, including two new spring-themed tracks that will be released soon, and the other two are pop ballads, my forte, which will be released soon. All of them are invested in with newer musical material, suitable for the tastes of current audiences. I also finished filming "Undercurrent ," which is planned to be shown as a film first, followed by a series on YouTube.

For the past two years, I've released music regularly, and it's been well-received by the audience. From the beginning to the end of the year, I've been invited to sing at various events, ticketed shows, nightclubs, and tea rooms. I'm doing very well, and my career is going smoothly.

- What changes do you think you need to make to maintain consistent performance and solidify your reputation in the music industry?

- In the past, famous artists could maintain their image for several years. Now, if you don't do anything, if you don't create, you'll be forgotten in just two or three months because audiences have many other means and platforms for entertainment.

Modern music isn't just about singing; it also incorporates rap, dance, and creative elements in arrangement and production. I research and adapt myself accordingly. Anything old or outdated must be discarded. I also frequently participate in music game shows to connect with younger audiences, not relying on my established reputation. Maintaining my performance level for 23 years of singing is proof of my hard work.

- What period in your career did you encounter setbacks?

- That's when I suffered a recurrence of my herniated disc, and it took me one or two years to recover. I sang intermittently to continue my career, but I couldn't fully express myself through music. At my lowest point, with no shows, I would sing for anyone who called me, for a fee of 5-10 million VND, sometimes even just out of affection. My health and image weren't good, and I was criticized for being past my prime. I was sad, but I didn't let it control me. I accepted all opinions to try harder, not to give up.

Currently, I'm confident in my stable performance and have the health to do anything. I've never thought I'm past my prime because I'm still in high demand and have products that attract attention. Last year, my song "Trọn hoàn nghĩa tình" from the movie "Phúc Cọp" reached millions of views on music streaming platforms. Wherever I perform, the audience always requests me to sing this song.

- What kind of pressure are you currently facing?

- That's raising and educating three children. My children all attend international schools, so the costs are high, around 500 million to billions of VND per year for each child. Anyone with children always wants the best for them. Investing in education is a burden for me, but it's also a motivation to work hard and earn money.

Besides the pressure, I'm happy that my children are all doing well in school and receiving praise from their teachers. They love each other, so our family is always peaceful and harmonious. I take care of my wife's son from a previous relationship – Kim Cương – as if he were my own child and treat them all equally. My wife and I are always close, supporting each other in everything from work to raising our children.

What other wishes do you have in life?

- Before becoming a singer, I loved to sing, hoping people would hear me, that my voice would touch people's hearts. Even though I didn't become famous later on, I still hold onto the same dream as when I first started my career. Every year, I prioritize maintaining my health, so that I can have the voice and physical strength to perform on stage.
