The Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone is one of the areas frequently affected by the circulation of typhoons and tropical depressions. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, the Provincial Border Guard Command has developed a plan and directed border guard posts and stations stationed on the island to implement disaster prevention and search and rescue tasks for every officer and soldier. As the rainy season draws to a close, units proactively monitor the area, implementing the "four on-the-spot" principle to respond to adverse weather conditions; and effectively carry out public relations work, calling on all citizens and fishermen to participate.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, residing in Ward 8, Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, shared: “As a boat owner, I am always aware that when going out to sea, I must be fully equipped with life jackets and other maritime safety equipment. I regularly study safety guidelines during the rainy and stormy season and comply with local regulations before going out to sea: I must have a complete communication device, a telephone, and set the frequency and phone number of relevant authorities to receive and respond to any weather-related information…”
The Provincial Border Guard Command organizes training courses to improve the skills and capabilities of officers, soldiers, and the people in disaster prevention, mitigation, and recovery. Subordinate units develop plans to organize training on topics such as swimming, rescue skills and methods at sea, and the use of life jackets and lifebuoys. Each border guard post establishes a mobile team, ready to deploy to key, vulnerable areas, low-lying areas, and coastal regions to coordinate with local authorities in guiding, assisting, and relocating people and property from dangerous areas during heavy rains. Units also implement solutions to minimize risks and accidents for fishermen.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Commander of the Nam Du Border Guard Station, stated: “Following the directives of the Provincial Border Guard Command regarding the peak period of disaster prevention and search and rescue at the end of the rainy season, we have implemented them seriously. Since the beginning of the year, the unit has prepared personnel, equipment, and vehicles ready to mobilize when situations arise; we regularly train our officers and soldiers to be quick-witted and in good health.”
In addition, attention has been paid to ensuring communication between the sea and the land. From the command center to the grassroots units, regular and smooth communication with fishermen has been maintained, thereby ensuring a firm grasp of the situation at sea and promptly guiding vessels to find safe shelter and anchorage during storms and tropical depressions. Border guard control stations have intensified inspections to ensure maritime safety, thereby detecting, correcting, and promptly addressing violations, and proposing many solutions for managing ships, boats, and fishermen participating in activities at sea…
