Since the community-based public service center organized a training course on folk singing and Bài Chòi (a traditional Vietnamese folk game), Mr. Le Van Kien (40 years old) has enthusiastically attended the class at the village cultural center under the guidance of Meritorious Artist Do Huu Que. Mr. Kien expressed that since childhood, he has loved Bài Chòi songs and often enjoyed them on stage during festivals and holidays in the area.
Now, attending the class and receiving dedicated instruction from the Bài Chòi artisans fills him with joy and fulfills his passion. After the conversation, he immediately sang quite clearly the traditional Bài Chòi song: “Let’s go play Bài Chòi. Let the baby cry until its belly button pops out…”
Pham Hong Hanh (12 years old) has also enjoyed watching and listening to Bai Choi for a long time. Participating in the class not only helps her learn to sing, recite poetry, recite rhymes, and engage in dialogue, but also gives her a thorough understanding of the origins of Bai Choi and the meaningful lyrics distilled from life experiences.
As someone who directly teaches the Bài Chòi folk singing class and is also a native of the village, Meritorious Artist Do Huu Que shared that Bài Chòi is not only a form of folk art and folk game, but also a source of encouragement, humor, wit, and oral tradition through simple, familiar yet meaningful and profound lyrics. For example, the chants encourage people to strive for what is right and just, to respect their parents, and to be grateful to their teachers… He believes that listening to, learning, and singing the lyrics of Bài Chòi helps people to pursue beneficial things and become more connected to each other.
Expressing his happiness that Bài Chòi (a traditional Vietnamese folk game) has been widely introduced to the people, Mr. Tán Kim (72 years old), Head of the Front Committee and Chairman of the Bài Chòi Club, shared that amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, the preservation and transmission of Bài Chòi songs by both the elderly and children makes him happy. Many elderly people in the village sometimes remember or forget, but whenever they hear about Bài Chòi, they are captivated and delighted. Because for the people in the village in particular and the commune in general, Bài Chòi is like the soul of their homeland, always clearly present in their spiritual life.
According to Mr. Kim, the class is held every Tuesday and Sunday evening. The class is taught by the city's traditional folk singing artists, helping people understand the art of performance, singing skills, and how to use props and costumes appropriately. He hopes that the class will preserve the spirit of the countryside amidst urbanization, aiming to create a community rich in tradition, dynamic and creative, and integrating cultural spirit with social life.
Mr. Le Van Hung Vuong, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Commune Party Committee, said that the class not only helps people learn to sing Bai Choi folk songs but also serves as an extension to young people to preserve and protect traditional cultural values. Simultaneously, the class is one of the initiatives aimed at building Bo Ban village into a distinctive cultural village by 2030, with a vision to 2045.
