The Thoai Mother Goddess Temple, part of the Phong Muc scenic area, has been restored and renovated to meet the religious needs of the people.
Legend has it that Mau Thoai was the third daughter (Chua Ba) of King Lac Long Quan and Queen Au Co. Her father entrusted her with governing 12 seaports, 90 rivers, and 36 large lakes. She divided her followers among herself to manage the river junctions, earning her the title of Tam Giang Than Nu (Goddess of the Three Rivers). She often manifested herself to help the country and save the people. During the early Le Dynasty, when King Le Thanh Tong was fighting invaders in the south and crossing the Len River, he suddenly encountered a violent storm with raging waves, nearly capsizing his royal boat. However, Mau Thoai intervened to save him, and the storm immediately subsided. Upon his victorious return, the king bestowed upon her the title of Thuy Phu Than Nu (Goddess of the Water Palace), Chieu Minh Dai Vuong (Great King Chieu Minh), and the people erected a temple at the foot of Da Bac Mountain, Phong Muc village, Ha Trung district (now Phong Muc village, Trieu Loc commune, Thanh Hoa province) to worship her.
Later, when the worship of Saint Mother Lieu Hanh emerged, Lady Ba was honored as the central figure of the Three Holy Mothers. In the Forbidden Palace (the fifth palace, the highest position), the statue of Saint Mother Lieu Hanh is placed in the center, with Mother Thuong Ngan on the right and Mother Thoai on the left. However, due to many historical events and the passage of time, around 1976-1977, the temple became a ruin, much to the regret of the people. In 2015, with the attention of the State, philanthropists, and the local people, the Mau Thoai Temple was rebuilt, renovated, and restored to meet the religious needs of the people in the commune and visitors from all over. Currently, the temple is arranged in order of worship, consisting of 7 main palaces: the Mother Palace, the Jade Emperor Palace, the Council of Officials Palace, the First Lady Palace, the Second Lady Palace, the Council of Holy Maidens Palace, and the Council of Holy Maidens.
Every year, from the 1st to the 12th of June in the lunar calendar, the government and people of Trieu Loc commune solemnly organize the Phong Muc Festival with many special activities such as: offering incense, presenting congratulatory texts, beating drums to open the festival, and various artistic programs... At this time, the Mau Thoai Temple attracts a large number of people and tourists from all over to visit, worship, and pray for blessings and peace.
Mr. Le Ba Mon, the caretaker of Mau Thoai Temple, part of the Phong Muc scenic area, shared: "The Phong Muc scenic area in general and Mau Thoai Temple in particular are spiritual anchors for the people in the region. Over the years, thanks to the attention of the State and philanthropists, Mau Thoai Temple has been invested in, renovated, and beautified, creating favorable conditions for people and tourists from all over to visit and worship. Aware of my responsibility in preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, I have voluntarily participated in caring for and cleaning the environment at the site. At the same time, I actively promote and encourage people and tourists to behave in a civilized manner when offering incense at the site."
“To preserve and promote the value of Mau Thoai Temple, Trieu Loc commune continues to strengthen propaganda and education to raise awareness and responsibility among the people. From there, practical actions will be taken, working together with the Party committee and the government to preserve and promote the relic. Connecting Mau Thoai Temple and the Phong Muc scenic area with other tourist destinations in the region aims to attract tourists and contribute to promoting the image of Trieu Loc land and people,” shared Mr. Luu Trung Cong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Trieu Loc commune.
