Visiting the historical site of Giồng Dứa

The Giồng Dứa base in Mỹ Hạnh commune, Tây Ninh province, is an important historical site, a "highlight" of the solidarity between the military and the people, and a record of the leadership activities of the Saigon - Gia Định Regional Party Committee in the resistance war against the US and for national liberation.

Returning to this land, former Minister and Chair of the Committee on Population, Family and Children, and former Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union - Le Thi Thu - was deeply moved when she met her former comrades, including female former prisoners of war who were once closely associated with her.

Ms. Thu was born into a family with a revolutionary tradition. At the age of 12, she worked as a liaison for her mother, who was also a revolutionary fighter. She served as a secretary for Comrade Le Thi Rieng, then participated in revolutionary movements and was captured and imprisoned by the enemy for 3 years...

Delegates observed a moment of silence at the Giồng Dứa Historical Site.

Ms. Thu shared that, thanks to the people's nurturing, protection, and support, the revolutionary forces at the Giồng Dứa base were always safe from the fierce attacks of the US-puppet regime. The formation of this suburban base under conditions where the enemy was still very strong in the inner city reflected the flexible and skillful leadership of the Saigon-Gia Định Regional Party Committee in building forces and developing the revolutionary movement, gradually overcoming difficulties and contributing to the overall victory of the entire country.

“After retiring in 2008, I became the Head of the Traditional Resistance Club of the Women's Bloc of Ho Chi Minh City, and the Head of the Liaison Committee of Cadres of the Saigon - Gia Dinh Women's Affairs Committee. I was deeply moved to return to the Giong Dua historical site. The Duc Hoa area was one of the fiercest battlefields during the resistance war against the US. I hope that, building on the traditions of this heroic land, today's young generation will strive, possess good health and knowledge to build their homeland, worthy of the sacrifices of the previous generation,” said Ms. Thu.

Former Minister and Chair of the Committee on Population, Family and Children, and former Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Women's Union - Le Thi Thu (second from the right) shares her feelings upon revisiting the Giong Dua Historical Site.

During the war years, in order to build and develop forces, the Regional Party Committee and its subordinate agencies and units opened many training courses for key cadres for urban and rural movements. Due to security and secrecy requirements, these training courses could not be held within the city limits; therefore, bases had to be established on the outskirts of Saigon-Chợ Lớn to serve this need. In that historical context, the Giồng Dứa area in Mỹ Hạnh commune, Đức Hòa district, was chosen as a base by the combined districts of 5, 6, 7, and 8, and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee and the Workers' Affairs Committee under the Saigon-Gia Định Regional Party Committee.

This is where our soldiers, civilians, and many leading comrades took refuge, organized training, and built up forces for the revolutionary movement in the city during a time when the revolution in Southern Vietnam faced countless difficulties. It is also one of the typical bases representing the "People's Support Base" model – a distinctive feature of Vietnam's people's war.

The establishment of bases in the suburban areas reflects the flexible and skillful leadership of the Saigon-Gia Dinh Regional Party Committee in building forces and developing the revolutionary movement, gradually overcoming the difficulties and challenges of war, and contributing to the overall victory of the entire country.

Given its significant historical importance, the base encompassing districts 5, 6, 7, and 8, along with the Labor and Overseas Vietnamese Affairs Committees of the Saigon, Cholon, and Gia Dinh Regional Party Committee (1961-1964), was recognized as a provincial-level historical site by the People's Committee of Long An province (formerly) in 2012.
