The thematic exhibition "Collection of window eye sculptures by artist Bao Ly" was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hoi An Ancient Town being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site (December 4, 1999 - December 4, 2024).
For many years, artist Bao Ly, a collector in Hoi An, has been measuring, photographing, and collecting various types of window frames in Hoi An. Based on the idea of restoring original models and creating adaptations, artist Bao Ly presents this collection.
The image of the window frame has existed in Hoi An's architectural structures from the 17th and 18th centuries to the present day. This is a characteristic architectural detail, prominently displayed on the door frames and gates of communal houses, temples, ancestral halls, and residential houses.
According to the beliefs of the people of Hoi An, the window frames are sacred eyes of architectural structures, so they are cherished, preserved, and creatively decorated with various styles, colors, and cultural designs, all in the hope of bringing good fortune.
It is known that the image of the Hoi An gateway combined with the Hoai River is the main design element of the "Hoi An Garden" in Wernigerode People's Park, Federal Republic of Germany. This project was built in August 2023 - to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relations between the two localities.
