
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:04:33 AM (Vietnam time), 24km east-northeast of San Felipe, with a focal depth of 21.9km.
Less than a minute later, at 5:05:12 AM on the same day, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck 23km southeast of the town of Yumare, with a focal depth of 10km.
These earthquakes are considered among the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century.
The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the Virgin Islands. Authorities in the Dominican Republic also issued a similar warning for the island. Meanwhile, the tsunami warning for Puerto Rico was quickly lifted.
"There is a high probability of significant casualties and widespread damage, and this disaster has the potential to spread," the USGS warned.
Authorities have not yet released an estimate of the number of casualties.
Speaking on state television, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed: "Many buildings and homes have collapsed, and we are deploying all available resources, from security to civilian relief... Firefighters and police have been mobilized to respond to the current situation."
