Why did Trump threaten to attack ally Oman?

GD&TĐ - On May 27, US President Donald Trump threatened that the Pentagon would attack ally Oman.

Tensions escalated in late February 2026 after the US and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. In response, the Islamic Republic blockaded several routes in the Strait of Hormuz, blocking commercial ships and declaring a temporary closure of the shipping lane.

"No, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone. We will monitor it, but nobody will control it. That's part of the negotiations that the U.S. and Iran are conducting," Trump told reporters at a cabinet meeting on May 27.

“This is international waters. Oman will act like any other country. If their government tries to take control of the Strait of Hormuz, we’ll have to blow them up. Muscat understands that. They’ll be fine,” President Trump continued.

According to Reuters, the US leader made these comments after Iranian state television reported that they had obtained an informal draft agreement on reopening this important waterway, under which Iran and Oman would jointly manage maritime traffic.

Oman, a key US ally, mediated negotiations on Iran's nuclear program until they were suspended due to conflict.

Iran and Oman lie on opposite sides of the narrowest part of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 25% of the world's oil and 20% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) is regularly transported.

Iran closed this route to ships from "hostile nations" following US and Israeli airstrikes, while the Pentagon announced a blockade of Iranian ports by April 2026.

Since then, Iran has asserted its " sovereign right" to manage traffic through the strait and collect tolls.

Iran's peace terms reportedly include demands for war reparations, the withdrawal of US troops from the region, and an end to Israel's wars in Lebanon and Gaza.

The U.S. demands that Iran relinquish control of highly enriched uranium and completely dismantle its nuclear program, which Iran maintains is entirely for peaceful purposes.
