Cases of fish bones and foreign objects getting lodged in the intestine and traveling down to the appendix are rare.
On November 26th, Mr. Nguyen Van Del, Director of the Tan Hung District Medical Center (Long An province), announced that they had successfully performed surgery on a patient suffering from acute appendicitis caused by a fish bone lodged in their throat.
The patient is Mr. Ho Van Chinh (43 years old, residing in Vinh Buu commune, Tan Hung district).
Previously, on November 24th, Mr. Chinh was hospitalized with a high fever and severe abdominal pain. A CT scan revealed an abscess and a fish bone foreign body in the right lower abdomen.
The patient then underwent surgery to remove a 2.5cm long fish bone.
Patient Ho Van Chinh's health is now stable. |
According to Dr. Del, this is a rare case, as swallowing a fish bone usually causes it to puncture the stomach lining when it travels down; it is uncommon for a fish bone to travel all the way to the appendix.
