The "rough gem" is beginning to shine.

Located adjacent to Lam Dong province, Da Mi boasts beautiful, picturesque natural landscapes and a cool climate. Now, Da Mi in Ham Thuan Bac district is considered a "rough gem," beginning to shine.

"A rough gem"

Da Mi, located in Ham Thuan Bac district, Binh Thuan province, borders Lam Dong province. This area is famous for its picturesque landscapes and pleasant year-round climate. Tourism here is highlighted by its natural beauty, featuring the two lakes, Ham Thuan and Da Mi, and their abundant fruit orchards. Ham Thuan Lake covers 2,500 hectares and Da Mi Lake 600 hectares; both are stunning natural scenes, surrounded by mountains and hills, with large and small islands in the middle of the lakes, reflecting the quiet lives of the local people. If properly and fully exploited for its ecotourism potential, this area could become a new destination on the national tourism map, bringing significant economic value to the locality.

However, over the years, Da Mi tourism has remained a hidden gem waiting to shine. Despite the local authorities' efforts to attract tourism investors and transform Da Mi into an ideal destination, these efforts have only resulted in small-scale, spontaneous investments. In 2020, Lua Viet Tourism Co., Ltd. – Ho Chi Minh City organized a new tour to stimulate domestic tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic with the program "Following the Moon to the Forest and the Sea." During these trips, a group of journalists from the Vietnam Journalists Association and travel agencies from southern provinces visited and experienced a tour from Ho Chi Minh City – Cat Tien National Park (Lam Dong) – Da Mi – Ke Ga – Phan Thiet, staying in Da Mi for 2 days and 1 night. This field trip to Da Mi left a lasting impression on the journalists and tourism professionals regarding the area's beauty and tourism potential.

Subsequently, several investors came to inquire, including a business that registered to invest in the Green Holiday eco-tourism area, with a total investment of up to 150 billion VND, paving the way for Da Mi to gradually shape its future tourism areas. To ensure the long-term development of tourism in Da Mi, Ham Thuan Bac district has also focused on creating a green, clean, and beautiful landscape by planting many types of flowers and encouraging local people to work together in tourism development.

However, the allure of beach tourism – Binh Thuan's "specialty" – is stronger, causing other forms of ecotourism in the province to stagnate. Therefore, it's understandable that Da Mi, despite its beauty, remains a hidden "rough gem."

More and more tourists are coming to visit.

Shine

Today, things have changed with the presence of the North-South Expressway. In particular, the DT 714 road, once bustling with visitors to the Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee's base in the Sa Lon forest, Dong Giang commune, to pay respects to the heroic martyrs and conveniently stop by Da Mi, has been upgraded. This has given Da Mi tourism – a "rough gem" – the opportunity to shine. Many people are now flocking to Da Mi not only to enjoy the scenery but also to sample its unique fruit specialties, especially durian.

Many people in Da Mi have boldly invested in tourism, despite certain difficulties. “I live in Da Mi and see tourists from all over coming to visit and enjoy the scenery on the lake, but I haven't seen any safe transportation services here. So I invested in a lake tour combined with a visit to the fruit orchards, catering to both locals and tourists…,” shared Mai Van Minh, Director of Da Mi Tourism Development Joint Stock Company. Mr. Minh added that the demand for accommodation and rest areas in Da Mi is currently very high, but there are limitations due to land-related issues, so no one has dared to invest yet.

Da Mi is changing today, no longer a hidden "rough gem."

What Mr. Minh said aligns with what I saw during my recent weekend trip to Da Mi, where I witnessed a large influx of tourists. Perhaps the most enjoyable experience was the boat trip to Te Thien Island to admire the scenic landscape, followed by a visit to fruit orchards with durian, jackfruit, mango, and macadamia trees… In addition, tourists could try thrilling activities like speedboat surfing on the lake. This image, never seen before, is a sign that this region is beginning to change day by day.

Currently, Ham Thuan Bac district is very interested in encouraging and creating favorable conditions for businesses, cooperatives, and people to invest in developing tourism products such as resort tourism, forest-waterfall-lake ecotourism, nature-conquering tourism, agricultural ecotourism, and community tourism combined with homestays. At this rate, it won't be long before Da Mi shines as a top ecotourism destination with its own unique characteristics, not only in Binh Thuan but also in the Southeast region. This is because it possesses all the necessary elements to achieve this. And to be more certain, perhaps we should visit Da Mi once to experience and admire its distinctive beauty.
