At the demonstration area of the National Innovation Center in Hoa Lac ( Hanoi ), Viettel Group, a military telecommunications company, announced the successful development of a 5G chip.

This is Vietnam's first DFE 5G chip, part of the 5G product ecosystem entirely designed by Viettel engineers. According to Viettel representatives, the 5G chip is the most complex component of the 5G ecosystem.

This chip plays a crucial role in processing 5G DFE algorithms, controlling all operations of the 5G RRU (Receiver Unit), and facilitating high-speed communication with other 5G processing units. The 5G DFE chip is highly complex, boasting a computing power of 1 trillion operations per second and is highly regarded by reputable partners such as Synopsys.

The 5G chip series was designed and developed by Viettel Group.

The global market currently does not offer commercially available 5G chips. Mastering the entire chip design process is a crucial step for Vietnam to participate more deeply in the global semiconductor industry. This is a prerequisite for Viettel to be able to produce chips for various fields such as AI, 6G, IoT, etc., in the future.

For many years, Viettel has had a strategy of gradually replacing imported equipment and moving towards using entirely domestically produced equipment for its core telecommunications network.

Prior to successfully developing its own 5G chip, Viettel also collaborated with Qualcomm to research and successfully manufacture the world's first 5G base station radio module using an ASIC chipset based on the Open RAN standard.

This is considered a breakthrough, opening up opportunities to transform the telecommunications network infrastructure equipment manufacturing industry by potentially reducing costs and eliminating dependence on proprietary chipsets from other equipment manufacturers worldwide.

Viettel High Tech Corporation and Viettel Network Corporation have also successfully deployed a voice switchboard system for 4G/5G networks (IMS system).

The IMS system is a crucial component in the telecommunications network layer, providing voice calling services with advantages far superior to voice services on 3G networks.

Specifically, call setup time is three times faster, call quality meets HD call standards, and battery consumption of the terminal device is reduced by 30-50% during calls.

Viettel has also successfully integrated its self-developed telecommunications equipment products into its network, such as the OCS real-time billing system; the PCRF mobile internet access speed control system; the SMSC messaging system; and the CRBT ringtone waiting system.

Some of Viettel's "Made in Vietnam" core network products now account for over 50% of the network's infrastructure, such as the MSC soft switching system; EPC core network switching system; Site Router; eNodeB transceiver station, etc.

The 5G high-frequency signal processing transceiver unit manufactured by Viettel has been successfully tested in four provinces and cities.

Viettel is currently the only company in the world that is both a telecommunications network operator and a researcher and manufacturer of equipment. Thanks to the efforts of this network operator, Vietnam has become the 6th country in the world with the capacity to manufacture 5G network equipment.

Using Made in Vietnam network equipment will contribute to Vietnam's mastery of technology, reduce dependence on foreign countries, and save foreign currency for the country.
