On June 9th, the 11th Provincial People's Council of Vinh Long , term 2026-2031, convened and passed a resolution approving the establishment of new wards in the province.

Accordingly, 15 wards were established based on maintaining the existing area, population, and names of the communes, including: Tra On, Long Ho, Tan Quoi, Tam Binh, Mo Cay, Binh Dai, Phu Tuc, Tien Thuy, Tan Thuy, Cang Long, Ba Tri, Tieu Can, Hung Hoa, Tan Hoa, and Tap Ngai.
Specifically, Trung Thanh commune, upon the establishment of the ward, will be renamed Vung Liem ward.
After the establishment of 16 new wards, Vinh Long province now has 35 wards and 89 communes, with no changes in natural area, population, or the number of subordinate commune-level administrative units (124 units).
According to the People's Committee of Vinh Long province, the results of the review and comparison of standards show that the 16 communes mentioned above have fully met all 5/5 standards of a ward, such as: population size; natural area; location and function in planning; level of urbanization and level of socio -economic development. The results of the public consultation also received consensus ranging from 91 to 100%.

Residents also suggested that when establishing the ward, the government should focus on addressing several issues such as relocating the waste collection site, improving the quality of administrative procedures, investing in transportation infrastructure, and strengthening social welfare work.
After merging with Tra Vinh and Ben Tre , Vinh Long province has a natural land area of over 6,296 km² and a population of over 4.2 million people. The administrative center is located in Long Chau ward (Vinh Long city, former Vinh Long province).
