2024-2025 Winter-Spring Rice Crop: High Costs, Low Profits

(GLO) - Currently, farmers in Gia Lai province are harvesting the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, yields are low, while rice prices have fallen, resulting in low profits.

While harvesting the remaining 1.6 acres of rice paddies in the fields of Dak Doa town, Mr. Yich (Piom village, Dak Doa town) said: This season, he invested nearly 3 million VND in plowing, seeds, and fertilizer for 3.6 acres of rice paddies. He recently harvested 2 acres but only got 15 bags, 7 bags less than last year.

“The reason for the decrease in rice yield is that this area relies mainly on rainwater. Furthermore, this year there were prolonged cold spells after the Lunar New Year. When the rice plants were flowering, there was a prolonged heatwave, but the fields didn't have enough water. Currently, my family still has 1.6 acres of rice that have enough water to prepare for harvest, and we hope the yield will be the same as last year,” Mr. Yich said.

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Anh, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Dak Doa District: The rice paddies in the southern part of the district lack irrigation systems. Therefore, during the winter-spring crop season, farmers usually sow early-season rice on an area of about 100 hectares. This year, the erratic weather has affected the growth and development of the rice plants. Forecasts indicate that the yield of early-season rice is likely to decrease.

Meanwhile, in Chu Prong district, farmers in Ia Lau and Ia Pior communes have finished harvesting their 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop. Most farmers reported low yields and lower prices compared to the previous season. Mr. Nguyen Van Anh (Pho Hien village, Ia Lau commune) said: For the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, he sowed 5 hectares of wet rice using the Dai Thom 8 variety. From sowing to harvesting, the weather was cold for an extended period, with strong winds, and especially towards the end of the season, brown planthopper infestations caused damage, resulting in a yield reduction of 7-8 quintals/hectare compared to last year. With the same area, he harvested nearly 40 tons of dry rice last year, but this year only 33 tons. Not only did the yield decrease, but the price of Dai Thom 8 rice is only 8,200-8,500 VND/kg, 1,000-2,000 VND/kg lower than last year.

“Due to the high prices of rice seeds and fertilizers, the investment cost for 1 hectare of rice paddies is over 12 million VND, not including labor for care and harvesting. With the current prices and yields, my family only makes a profit of about 17 million VND/ha, a decrease of nearly 10 million VND/ha compared to last year,” Mr. Anh informed.

Similarly, Mr. Nhu Van Ky, Director of Hop Tien Agricultural and Service Cooperative (Ia Lau commune), said: “In previous years, the average rice yield reached 6.5-7 tons/ha, but this year it only reached 6 tons/ha, not to mention the increased investment and labor costs. With my family's 10 hectares of rice, I estimate the profit will only reach about 15 million VND/ha, a decrease of 5 million VND compared to the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring crop. The same applies to the rice fields of the Cooperative members.”

According to information from the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop season, the entire province sowed 26,882 hectares of rice, exceeding the planned target by 5.4%. Currently, the province has harvested more than 2,519 hectares, reaching over 9.37% of the area.

Mr. Le Thanh Cong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Lau commune, shared: "Up to this point, people in the commune have harvested 550 hectares of winter-spring rice. The average rice yield has decreased by 30-35% compared to last year. The reason is due to the impact of the intensified cold front and late-season pest and disease damage. In addition, the current rice price is only 7,500-8,500 VND/kg, so people are not achieving high profits."

In the Phu Thien rice-growing area, farmers have begun harvesting early-season rice crops sporadically. Mr. Mai Ngoc Quy, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Phu Thien district, said: "For the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the entire district sowed nearly 7,000 hectares of rice. To date, people have harvested about 300 hectares of early-season rice with an average yield estimated at 7.5 tons/ha, similar to last year; the remaining area of main-season rice will be ready for harvest in about 15 days."

Due to the impact of cold fronts about a month after sowing, the rice crop has developed slowly. In previous years, only 3 fertilizer applications were needed, but this year 4-5 applications are required. Currently, the price of fresh rice fluctuates between 8,000-8,500 VND/kg, while high-quality fragrant rice is around 9,000-9,500 VND/kg, resulting in a profit reduction of approximately 4 million VND/ha for the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop compared to the previous year.
