The spring rice crop achieved a "double victory".

The entire province has basically completed the spring rice harvest and has been assessed by the agricultural sector as a "double victory" due to both a good harvest and good prices.

In the spring of 2024, the family of Ms. Mai Thi Hue in Thuan Hau village, Xuan Minh commune (Tho Xuan district) planted 3 acres of rice and established a product distribution partnership with the Xuan Minh Agricultural Service and Rural Development Cooperative. Thanks to proper care and techniques, this year's spring rice crop was a great success for her family, with a yield of 3.5 quintals per sao (approximately 350 kg per 1000 square meters), resulting in a harvest of over 10 tons of rice from their 3 acres of land.

Ms. Hue happily shared: "This year's spring rice crop not only yielded high productivity but also sold at a good price. Through production linkage and product purchase contracts, the Xuan Minh Agricultural Service and Rural Development Cooperative is buying fresh rice directly from the fields at 7,500 VND/kg (1,200 VND/kg higher than last year), and dried rice at 12,000 VND/kg (3,500 VND/kg higher than last year). After deducting expenses, my family earned over 50 million VND from rice cultivation this spring."

Currently, Tho Xuan district has completed the harvest of 7,900 hectares of spring rice, including 5,600 hectares of hybrid rice, 2,000 hectares of high-quality purebred rice, and 300 hectares of glutinous rice. The majority of the area was planted with key rice varieties such as X21, Thai Xuyen 111, TBR 89, Phuc Thai 168, Thuy Huong 308, VNR 20, VT404, Phu Uu 978; TBR225, TBR279, TBR97, new BC15, Thien Uu 8... resulting in yields exceeding 71 quintals/hectare, making it one of the localities with the highest rice yields in the province. Rice cultivation is mainly concentrated in the communes of Xuan Sinh, Xuan Hong, Xuan Phong, Tho Loc, Truong Xuan, Xuan Minh, Xuan Lap, Xuan Lai, Phu Xuan, and scattered in some other localities. Due to the high price of rice, right from the beginning of the season, businesses and cooperatives have organized the purchase of fresh rice directly from farmers in the fields.

According to Mai Thi Hien, Director of the Xuan Lap Commune Agricultural and Rural Development Cooperative, this spring the cooperative acted as a liaison with businesses to link production and guarantee the purchase of commercial rice from 200 hectares of rice fields belonging to farmers in the commune and neighboring localities of Tho Xuan district. To date, the cooperative has purchased more than 500 tons of fresh rice and paid farmers directly at the fields.

After harvesting, the farmers deliver the fresh rice to the Xuan Minh Agricultural and Rural Development Service Cooperative (Tho Xuan).

According to reports from localities, as of May 31, 2024, the area of ​​spring rice harvested throughout the province reached 105,395 hectares (92.79% of the plan), with yields ranging from 67.5 to 68 quintals/hectare, an increase of 0.5 to 1 quintal/hectare compared to the same period last year. According to the agricultural sector's assessment, to achieve high yields and production in the spring rice crop, the agricultural sector and localities in the province proactively prepared production conditions from the beginning of the season, arranging appropriate crop varieties and planting times. Production land was cleared and prepared early, especially the area for drying and soaking, which was expanded, and water resources were regulated scientifically and rationally; fertilizer supplies were ensured in both quality and quantity, and plant protection was proactive. In addition, the farmers' intensive farming skills have improved, resulting in a spring rice crop that is healthy, free from pests and diseases, and yields are high. When the rice ripened, local authorities requested cooperatives to focus on managing manpower and rice harvesting machinery for farmers quickly and efficiently, in order to minimize losses caused by thunderstorms.

According to Vu Quang Trung, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection: The 2024 spring rice crop is considered a successful one, with both a good harvest and good prices. Many localities achieved high yields, such as the districts of Tho Xuan, Yen Dinh, Thieu Hoa, Trieu Son, Hoang Hoa, Hau Loc, Nga Son... In particular, in many localities, right from the beginning of the harvest season, cooperatives acted as intermediaries, linking with businesses to purchase fresh rice directly from the fields at high prices, which greatly pleased the farmers. Although heavy thunderstorms occurred throughout the province at the end of the season, causing some spring rice crops to be damaged, the agricultural sector and localities promptly guided farmers to drain the water from flooded fields. At the same time, they instructed farmers to tie up and straighten the fallen rice plants and regulate water properly in the rice fields that were heading. In addition, focus on mobilizing manpower and machinery to organize a quick and efficient rice harvest with the motto "better to harvest while the rice is still green than to let it ripen too much in the field," especially in areas prone to flooding, while simultaneously freeing up land for the autumn crop within the best timeframe.
