In the quarter-final round, filmed in Hong Kong (China) and broadcast on the afternoon of June 27th, Phuong My Chi sang "Bong Phu Hoa" (composed by DTAP), inspired by the story "The Girl from Nam Xuong". The highlight of the performance was the chorus sung in Chinese and the high notes. Currently, the performance has over 1.7 million views and is in the top 3 trending videos on YouTube.
Earlier, during the filming in Singapore, Phuong My Chi performed a mashup of "Ly Bac Bo" (Ba Cong Di Cho Troi Mua, Ly Cay Da, Ba Rang Ba Ri, Day Xe Bo) composed by DTAP, inspired by the cultural life of people in Northern Vietnam. She brought the traditional drum dance to the stage, causing judges Truong Luong Dinh and Thai Nha Kien to dance along.

In her first performance of the show, Phuong My Chi sang "Buon Trang" (composed by DTAP), partly inspired by the poem "Day Thon Vi Da" by poet Han Mac Tu. She showcased her strong voice, smooth vocal embellishments, and commanded the stage with a diverse performance style, incorporating Vovinam martial arts movements at the end of the act.
Judges Tô Hữu Bằng, Trương Lương Dĩnh, and Đan Trường were all enthusiastic about the Gen Z singer's performance. On social media platforms, the clip quickly went viral with a huge number of shares, bringing Phương Mỹ Chi back to the music scene in a brilliant way.
Success and failure
Besides the large number of views on the show's YouTube channel, Phuong My Chi also appeared on several news sites such as QQ, Guangming, and Sinchew… Phuong My Chi's initial success reminded many viewers of other Vietnamese artists who had previously gone to China to compete in music programs, such as Chi Pu, Ly Ly, and Suni Ha Linh (SUNI).
Chi Pu achieved great success participating in the "Riding the Wind 2023" program. Winning this competition opened up many opportunities for the female singer in the Chinese entertainment market. Chi Pu was the only Vietnamese artist to participate in Hunan TV's New Year's Eve program alongside Wang Hedi, Yang Zi, Tan Jianci, Huang Xiaoming, etc. She also opened a restaurant in China and has a huge fan base in this country of over a billion people.
Following in Chi Pu's footsteps, Suni Hạ Linh joined "Đạp gió" a year later, but unlike Chi Pu, Suni Hạ Linh's achievements were lackluster, and she also became a "villain" in the eyes of Vietnamese fans. Previously, Suni Hạ Linh was considered a role model of a sophisticated young singer, possessing many hit songs such as "Em đã biết," "Không sao mà em đây rồi," "Cứ chill thôi," "Thích rồi đấy," etc. Her clear voice and sweet style, reminiscent of a "national first love," made her a prominent figure in the new generation of Vpop music. However, her career can be summed up in two words: "Cute"—something that made her beloved, but also the barrier that prevented Suni Hạ Linh's name from truly exploding on the Vietnamese music scene.
According to experts, among the aforementioned singers, Phuong My Chi has the clearest strategy and a burning desire to win. Phuong My Chi's impact stems from her spirit and belief in Vietnamese culture. Her releases showcase an aesthetic fusion of Vietnamese folk culture with global music trends. The distinctive and unique local flavor is preserved and showcased in an appealing and prominent way throughout her performances.
Insiders believe that Phuong My Chi invested heavily in her first participation in a music competition in China. Her team put a lot of effort into costumes, staging, and elaborate props, all consistent with the melody and message of the song. Chi Pu, on the other hand, differentiated herself through her performance to compensate for her vocal limitations. In a major competition like "Riding the Wind 2023," there were many powerful voices, but not many singers who performed acrobatics, somersaults, or stripped down – essentially investing heavily in their performances – like Chi Pu did.
Suni Hạ Linh, despite having a good singing voice, impressive dance moves, and speaking fluent Chinese, is weak in terms of visuals. Throughout the competition, Suni Hạ Linh constantly sparked controversy regarding her outfits. Furthermore, the acrobatic concept she used had already been successfully exploited by Chi Pu previously.
According to an expert, "When participating in an international competition, Vietnamese singers have to invest heavily in time, effort, finances, and strategy. Differentiation and uniqueness are the most important things."
