Achieve the goal.
The former Tay Ninh and Long An provinces have always considered building and repairing houses of gratitude and solidarity for disadvantaged families and those facing housing difficulties not only as a responsibility but also as a heartfelt imperative. Accordingly, the entire political system and all sectors of the population have shared this responsibility. According to Nguyen Thi Cam Huyen, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Hung commune: “During the construction and repair of charitable houses and solidarity houses for families facing housing difficulties, the commune regularly sends officials to inspect and supervise to promptly resolve difficulties. For single-parent families, those with illnesses, or those lacking sufficient matching funds, the commune mobilizes youth union members, civil defense forces, and armed forces stationed in the area to provide labor support in transporting construction materials and participating in house construction, helping families reduce labor costs. As a result, before April 30, 2025, the commune will complete the repair of 6 charitable houses for disadvantaged families; and build 14 solidarity houses for the poor and those facing housing difficulties.”
Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Chi (far left, residing in Vinh Hung commune) now has a spacious house to "settle down and prosper".
For over 20 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Chi (residing in Vinh Hung commune) borrowed land from an acquaintance to build a makeshift shack to live in. Her dream was to own her own house. She saved up for a long time to buy a small plot of land in an alley, but lacked the money to build a house. Sympathizing with Ms. Chi's situation, the commune supported her in building a "Great Solidarity" house with a budget of 80 million VND. Ms. Chi confided: “The house is far from the main road, and vehicles carrying building materials couldn't get in, so labor costs doubled. Fearing I wouldn't have enough money to build the house, I considered refusing, but the commune officials encouraged and supported me, and that's how the house was completed. On the day of handover, the commune and neighbors also gave me many household items such as a fan, a rice cooker, a table, chairs, etc. This kind support helped me overcome my feelings of inferiority about my family's circumstances, and instead gave me more faith and motivation to rise out of poverty and stabilize my life.”
With a sense of responsibility and sharing, both the former Long An and Tay Ninh provinces have implemented many innovative approaches in eliminating temporary and dilapidated housing for disadvantaged families and poor people facing housing difficulties, contributing to improving the quality of life for the people. A highlight of the former Tay Ninh province was the innovative increase in the area of the "Great Solidarity" houses from 32m² (as stipulated) to 40m², providing more spacious living spaces for households.
In a short period of time, on April 30, 2025, the former Tay Ninh province issued a press release announcing the completion of the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses for two projects: repairing and building houses for poor and near-poor households according to central and provincial standards, and the project to build and repair houses for people with meritorious services to the revolution in Tay Ninh province. Accordingly, the former Tay Ninh province completed the construction of 172 houses of gratitude (56 new houses, 116 repairs); completed 594 houses of solidarity for the poor (464 new houses, 130 repairs);... The former Long An province completed the construction of 330 houses of solidarity (310 new houses, 20 repairs) for the poor with a total cost of over 25.6 billion VND; completed 328 houses of gratitude for families with difficult housing situations. In addition to the provincial movement, the former Kien Tuong district and town, and the former Tan An city, have mobilized resources to build and repair 59 houses of gratitude, including 29 new houses and 30 repaired houses, with a total amount of nearly 3.9 billion VND.
The success of the program to build and repair houses for needy families, eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, is not only measured by the number of houses built, but more importantly by the spread of good deeds and the increasingly strong trust of the people in the Party's leadership. The joy is not only felt by those who received housing assistance, but is also shared by the entire political system and all segments of the population.
Shared joy
The new house of Mr. Le Van Hoa (residing in Nhon Ninh commune) - son of martyr Le Van Sang, is spacious and well-maintained.
In 2000, the family of Mr. Le Van Hoa (residing in Nhon Ninh commune) – son of martyr Le Van Sang – received 18 million VND in support to build a house of gratitude, with an area of 32m2, tiled floor, and corrugated iron roof. Over time, the house deteriorated, the walls leaked, and the roof was damaged. Meanwhile, the family only had income from 1 hectare of rice land, so the intention to repair the house remained unfulfilled. At the end of 2024, he received 50 million VND in support to repair the house of gratitude. This amount may not be large for many people, perhaps only enough to pay for labor, but for Mr. Hoa, it was a seed capital, a token of gratitude from today's generation to the family of martyrs, giving him more motivation to complete the house. Mr. Hoa shared: “My family had considered renovating the house many times, but we never had enough money. With the 50 million VND support and our savings, I was able to renovate our old house, which is nearly 75 square meters. Thanks to this, my family now has a place to worship the martyrs and a more spacious and comfortable living area.”
With a grant of 100 million VND to build a house of gratitude, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chi (far left, residing in Binh Hiep commune) now has a spacious house to worship the Heroic Vietnamese Mother and three martyrs.
Similarly to Mr. Hoa, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chi (residing in Binh Hiep commune) received 100 million VND in support to build a house of gratitude to commemorate Heroic Vietnamese Mother Le Thi Tot and three martyrs. Ms. Chi emotionally said: “In 2000, my family received support to build a house of gratitude. Over time, the house deteriorated and was damaged by termites. Thanks to the support of the commune, in 2024, my family had the means to build a new house, providing a more solemn place to worship the martyrs.”
Having received support for building a solidarity house and providing breeding cattle, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (residing in Binh Hiep commune) voluntarily wrote a letter requesting to be removed from the list of near-poor households, giving up the preferential policies of the Party and State to those in more difficult circumstances.
For the poor and families facing housing difficulties, receiving support for building and repairing houses is not simply about material value, but also demonstrates the compassion and generosity of all levels of government and relevant agencies. This is a way to instill strength and determination in these families to strive for a better life. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (residing in Binh Hiep commune) shared: “My family has been classified as near-poor for over 10 years and has received many preferential policies from the Party and State for the poor, such as support for breeding cows, health insurance cards, electricity subsidies, etc. Especially in 2024, my family received 80 million VND to build a 'Great Solidarity' house. Having received so much help from all levels of government and relevant agencies, my family voluntarily wrote a letter requesting to be removed from the near-poor list so that this assistance could be given to families in more difficult circumstances.”
The "sweet fruits" of the journey to build compassionate homes in the former Long An province, the former Tay Ninh province, and the new Tay Ninh province have become a shining example in implementing gratitude and repayment programs, social welfare, and sustainable poverty reduction. This has contributed to accelerating the completion of new rural development tasks in these localities, promoting socio-economic development, and creating a strong impetus for the nation's progress into a new era.
