On September 15th, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun unveiled the new Xiaomi 17 smartphone series, consisting of three models: Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

The previous generation was the Xiaomi 15 series, launched in October 2024. If it hadn't skipped a step, this generation would have been called the Xiaomi 16. The previous product line also had three models: standard, Pro, and Ultra. The new naming convention suggests Xiaomi wants to directly compete with Apple's devices.

Earlier, Xiaomi Chairman Lu Weibing announced on social media that the Xiaomi 17 would be launched this month, a month earlier than the usual annual cycle. According to him, this would be "the most significant leap forward in the history of the company's smartphone line."

All three will be the world's first devices equipped with the fifth-generation Snapdragon 8 Extreme Edition mobile chip. This is considered a strategic highlight, helping Xiaomi elevate its competitive position in the high-end segment.

Chairman Lu Weibing affirmed that Xiaomi's confidence stems from two main factors: a clear understanding of product positioning and sustainable technological accumulation.

“There’s no room for flaws in the premium segment. From top-tier specifications and a focus on user experience to the integration of hardware and software, Xiaomi has made tremendous strides in the past five years,” he said.

To achieve this result, the Chinese tech giant has significantly increased its investment in research and development (R&D). According to figures released by Lu Weibing, the company has spent over 100 billion yuan ( US$14 billion ) on R&D in the past five years and expects this figure to double to 200 billion yuan ( US$28 billion ) in the next five years.

"This time, with the Xiaomi 17 series, everyone will witness our latest achievements," the Xiaomi president emphasized.

Besides asserting its technological prowess, Xiaomi's leadership also directly aims to compete with Apple. Skipping the number 16 to launch the Xiaomi 17 is a symbolic move to directly challenge the iPhone 17, which Apple unveiled on September 10th.

Over the years, Xiaomi has strived to move away from its image as a mid-range brand, instead focusing on high-end products to compete with Apple and Samsung. From hardware and design to its software ecosystem, the company clearly demonstrates its direction towards the global high-end market.

With its earlier-than-expected launch and significant investment in chips and technology platforms, the Xiaomi 17 is expected to be a landmark product line. However, its ability to directly compete with the iPhone still needs to be tested through market feedback after the product hits the shelves.
