Zidane refused to manage Manchester United. |
According to Marcel Desailly, a former teammate of Zidane's during the 1998 World Cup winning season, the former Real Madrid coach doesn't prioritize money and always chooses projects that offer long-term spiritual and strategic value.
After leaving Real Madrid in 2021, Zidane became one of the most sought-after names in the coaching world. Manchester United, amidst a crisis under Erik ten Hag, even made an official offer with one of the highest salaries in the world .
However, Zidane declined, partly because he wasn't confident in his English skills and partly because he didn't see a fit with the club's development direction. Not only did he reject Man Utd, Zidane is also said to have turned down a €100 million one-year offer to manage Al-Hilal, a Saudi Arabian football giant.
Desailly shared: “Zidane doesn’t work for money. He won’t change his lifestyle for money. He chooses to do something when he sees true meaning in it.”
According to Desailly, Zidane's next most likely destination is the French national team, which he has closely followed for many years. Didier Deschamps' transition could be the ideal time for Zidane to take over.
With a rising generation of talent such as Kylian Mbappa, Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele, and William Saliba, the French national team is on the verge of a new golden age. Zidane, with his class, tactical vision, and the respect he commands from the players, is considered the ideal man to lead the French team into this era of success.
Zidane is not only dedicated to football, but also invests in the future through sports . Last February, he spent £4 million to build a padel (a hybrid sport between tennis and squash) center in France.
