Gymnastics is currently embroiled in several scandals. Firstly, the case of athlete Pham Nhu Phuong , a member of the national gymnastics team, accusing coach NTD of withholding prize money, is causing a public uproar.
In an interview with the press, athlete Pham Nhu Phuong affirmed that she is constantly being forced to give 10% of her medal prize money, along with 50% of her prize money from businesses and sponsors, to the head coach. She also has to contribute several hundred thousand dong each month to a fund, but she doesn't know how that money is being used.
Athlete Pham Nhu Phuong trains at the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi.
Following initial investigation and verification, the Department of Sports and Physical Education confirmed that the information regarding the coach collecting medal money from athlete Pham Nhu Phuong is true. However, this incident occurred while the athlete was training locally and was not a policy of the Department of Sports and Physical Education.
The explanatory document from the Department of Sports and Physical Education sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism clearly states: "Representatives from the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi , the Gymnastics Department, and the national team coaches attending the meeting clearly reported and committed that the national team's coaching staff, the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi, and the Gymnastics Department of the Department of Sports and Physical Education have no intention of collecting medal prize money or any other funds for athletes' expenses."
Coach NTD, who is implicated in the alleged collection of prize money, explained that the funds were collected from athletes of the Hanoi team. At a meeting of the High-Performance Sports Department I of the Department of Sports and Physical Education with national gymnastics team athletes on January 16th, all athletes confirmed that no coach had ever collected money from them.
The investigation results show that the national gymnastics team's coaching staff was not involved in the distribution of prize money to the national gymnastics team's athletes. Coach NTD committed misconduct by receiving money from athlete Pham Nhu Phuong.
This afternoon (January 17th), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will chair a meeting with the Department of Sports and Physical Education, the National Sports Training Center in Hanoi, and the national team's coaching staff to review the entire incident that just occurred. This includes the issue of the two head coaches of the national gymnastics team recording the athletes' attendance on their days off (Saturday and Sunday) even though the athletes were not training. The athletes still received their training pay, but half of it had to be given to the coaches to contribute to the team's fund.
The leadership of the sports sector may propose temporary disciplinary measures. Following the suspension of coach NTD from training, it is highly likely that the two head coaches of the men's and women's gymnastics teams will be dismissed from their positions. The leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that they will thoroughly investigate to clarify the matter. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong.
