The S&P 500 index, based on the common stock of the 500 largest companies listed in the US by market capitalization, plummeted 10% on March 13th from its all-time high in February, wiping out $5 trillion from the US stock market.

The market capitalization of the S&P 500 index peaked at $52.06 trillion on February 19, according to CNBC on March 14, citing data from FactSet, a website that tracks US stock market activity.
By the market close on March 13, the S&P 500, a measure of the health of the US economy , had plummeted to $46.78 trillion, a drop of more than 10% from February 19, equivalent to approximately $5.28 trillion in three weeks.
The sharp decline in the S&P 500 index occurred as US President Donald Trump launched a trade war by imposing tariffs and retaliatory duties on several of the country's key trading partners.
The White House offers reassurances, while Wall Street worries about the risk of a US economic recession.
Observers have also noted signs of slowing economic growth, from the results of consumer sentiment surveys to the lackluster business outlook of retail giants like Walmart.
"While many believe it's too early to talk about a recession, there's widespread anxiety about the new administration's erratic policies," CNBC quoted Barlays strategist Emmanuel Cau on March 14.
Another factor contributing to the worrying performance in the stock market comes from developments in the artificial intelligence sector. Since November 19, 2024, Nvidia shares have fallen 17%, and MAGS shares (an exchange-traded fund of seven major US technology companies) have dropped 19%.
The fact that AI-related stocks all reached highs before plummeting by as much as 10% in the past three weeks has led to concerns that the stock market is overvalued. Some stocks at one point reached market capitalizations exceeding $3 trillion.
