Specifically, 10,600 5G base transceiver stations (BTS) have been installed. This achievement comes exactly one year after the first mobile operator successfully bid for 5G frequencies (March 2024) and less than half a year after 5G commercialization. Mobile internet speeds in Vietnam have also surged, reaching 150.43 Mbps, ranking 18th in the world , according to the rankings from March.
According to the Prime Minister 's report, one of the tasks set out is to strive to deploy at least 55,000 new 5G base stations in 2025. Currently, the Ministry of Science and Technology is implementing many measures to promote digital infrastructure. Accordingly, the 700 MHz frequency band, considered suitable for increasing 5G network coverage, was successfully re-auctioned on May 20th. The Ministry of Science and Technology is also setting two main tasks for this year: increasing mobile internet speeds by expanding 5G coverage and piloting telecommunications services using low-orbit satellites.
According to Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung, normally each network operator invests in only around 5,000 5G base stations per year. If the government wants them to invest in 20,000 stations annually to rapidly expand coverage, it must support them. According to Resolution No. 193/2025/QH15 (dated February 19, 2025) of the National Assembly “on piloting some special mechanisms and policies to create breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation,” network operators deploying 20,000 new 5G BTS stations by the end of 2025 will receive support equivalent to 15% of the total investment value. Recently, Viettel's Chairman and CEO, Tao Duc Thang, affirmed that the network operator will complete 20,000 5G BTS stations, covering 95% of urban centers nationwide by 2025.
The Vietnam Internet Center has just released data from the i-Speed platform showing that in April 2025, mobile broadband network speeds of telecommunications service providers in Vietnam improved across the board. In the field of next-generation wireless technology, 5G network quality also saw a significant leap in April. Geographically, Da Nang City continued to maintain its leading position in 5G network quality with an impressive average speed of 393.84 Mbps, followed by Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho City, and Hai Phong City, confirming the strong development of 5G in major cities.
Currently, Viettel has approximately 6.2 million 5G subscribers, nearing its 2025 target of 10 million 5G subscribers. VNPT also announced 5G coverage to all central areas of 63 provinces and cities, all 705 district-level administrative units, and key areas such as industrial zones, airports, and political centers. VNPT stated that it currently has over 3 million subscribers using 5G. MobiFone also reached approximately 2 million 5G subscribers after one month of officially launching the service. These figures demonstrate the immense appeal and potential of 5G in Vietnam. And, 5G in Vietnam is accelerating rapidly in all aspects.
