Specifically, 10,600 5G base transceiver stations (BTS) have been installed. This is the result achieved exactly one year after the first network operator successfully auctioned 5G frequencies (March 2024) and less than half a year of commercializing 5G. Mobile internet speed in Vietnam was also recorded to have skyrocketed, reaching 150.43 Mbps, ranking 18th in the world , according to the rankings last March.
According to the Prime Minister 's report, one of the tasks set out is to strive to deploy at least 55,000 new 5G BTS stations in 2025. Currently, the Ministry of Science and Technology is implementing many measures to promote digital infrastructure. Accordingly, the 700 MHz band, which is considered suitable for increasing 5G network coverage, was successfully re-auctioned on May 20. The Ministry of Science and Technology is also setting two main tasks this year: increasing mobile internet speed by covering 5G and piloting telecommunications services using low-altitude satellites.
According to Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung, normally each network operator only invests around 5,000 5G stations per year. If they want to invest 20,000 stations per year for fast coverage, the State must support the network operators. According to Resolution No. 193/2025/QH15 (February 19, 2025) of the National Assembly "on piloting a number of special mechanisms and policies to create breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation", network operators deploying 20,000 new 5G BTS stations by the end of 2025 will be supported with 15% of the total investment value. Recently, Viettel Chairman and General Director Tao Duc Thang affirmed that this network operator will complete 20,000 5G BTS stations, covering 95% of urban residential areas nationwide in 2025.
Vietnam Internet Center has just announced data from the i-Speed platform showing that in April 2025, the mobile broadband network speed of telecommunications service providers in Vietnam has improved simultaneously. In the field of new generation wireless technology, 5G network quality also made a leap forward in April. In terms of geographical area, Da Nang City continues to maintain its leading position in 5G network quality with an impressive average speed of 393.84 Mbps, followed by Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho City and Hai Phong City, affirming the strong development momentum of 5G in major cities.
Currently, Viettel's 5G subscribers have reached about 6.2 million users, getting closer to the target of 10 million 5G subscribers by 2025. VNPT also announced 5G coverage to all central areas of 63 provinces and cities and all 705 administrative units at district and county levels, as well as important areas such as industrial parks, airports, and political centers. VNPT said that there are currently more than 3 million subscribers using 5G. MobiFone network also reached about 2 million 5G subscribers, after 1 month of officially providing the service. The numbers show that the appeal and potential of 5G in Vietnam is huge. And, 5G in Vietnam is accelerating strongly, in all aspects.
