60 years of Ham Rong victory

On the evening of April 3, Thanh Hoa province held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ham Rong victory (April 3-4, 1965 - April 3-4, 2025).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Doan Anh, member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, said that the 60th anniversary of Ham Rong victory is an opportunity to review the heroic fighting tradition, bravery and indomitable will of the previous generation, while at the same time arousing the pride and responsibility of today's generation in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

According to Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Doan Anh, Thanh Hoa was identified as the direct rear of the Binh - Tri - Thien front and Ham Rong bridge was the "ideal choke point" on the transportation route from North to South. Destroying Ham Rong bridge would cut off the North - South traffic artery, so President Johnson and the US government attacked Thanh Hoa province, especially the Ham Rong area, with mixed forces of the air force and navy.

The 60th anniversary of Ham Rong victory is an opportunity to review the heroic fighting tradition, courageous spirit and indomitable will of previous generations.

Representatives of central agencies, leaders of Thanh Hoa province and people attended the ceremony.

At exactly 8:45 a.m. on April 3, 1965, the US sent a series of planes to attack and drop bombs, starting from Do Len bridge (Ha Trung district) to attack the key area of Ham Rong. On the first day, the US Air Force used 102 groups of fighter planes to attack fiercely for 3 hours. On April 4, 1965, the enemy continued to use a large force of planes to bomb with great speed and intensity, organizing an attack every 10 minutes.

"In that context, the Thanh Hoa army and people in all battlefields and combat positions still held their ground steadfastly, with intelligent, bold, and surprising fighting methods, determined to fight and win to protect their homeland. During the 2 days of April 3-4, 1965, the Thanh Hoa army and people shot down 47 US aircraft, of which, in the Ham Rong area alone, 31 were shot down. The US empire had to bitterly admit that "those were 2 dark days for the US air force", Mr. Anh said.

Ham Rong Bridge

Representing the young generation speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Hoang Le Quynh Loan, Member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association, Vice President of the Student Association of Hong Duc University, said that the heroic history of Ham Rong in the past has given today's young generation faith, love, and pride in the land where they were born and raised, and in the responsibility of youth on the path of lifelong learning to dare to think, dare to speak, dare to do, dare to take responsibility, dare to sacrifice for the common good, to become useful people for society.

Ms. Hoang Le Quynh Loan, Member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association, Vice President of the Student Association of Hong Duc University, representing the young generation, spoke at the ceremony.

"Our young generation is deeply aware that every achievement we enjoy today is paid for by the blood and bones of heroic martyrs, wounded and sick soldiers... Our young generation will never stop studying, working, creating, mastering science and technology; striving to start a business; bringing the strength, courage and intelligence of youth into the cause of innovation, industrialization, modernization of the country and international integration ," said Ms. Loan./.
