According to Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Doan Anh, recognizing Thanh Hoa as the direct rear base of the Binh-Tri-Thien front and Ham Rong Bridge as an "ideal choke point" on the North-South transportation route, and realizing that destroying Ham Rong Bridge would sever the vital North-South transportation artery, President Johnson and the US administration attacked Thanh Hoa province, especially the Ham Rong area, with a combined force of air and naval forces.
The 60th anniversary of the Ham Rong victory is an opportunity to recall the heroic fighting tradition, the courageous spirit, and the unwavering will of our forefathers.
Representatives from central agencies, leaders of Thanh Hoa province, and local people attended the ceremony.
At exactly 8:45 AM on April 3, 1965, the US launched a barrage of aircraft, starting from the Do Len Bridge (Ha Trung District), to bomb the key Ham Rong area. On the first day, the US Air Force used 102 squadrons of fighter planes to launch intense attacks for three hours. On April 4, 1965, the enemy continued to use a large force of aircraft to bomb with high speed and intensity, launching an attack every 10 minutes.
"In that context, the people and soldiers of Thanh Hoa, across all battlefields and combat positions, held their ground tenaciously, employing intelligent, bold, and unexpected tactics, determined to fight and win to protect their homeland. In the two days of April 3-4, 1965, the people and soldiers of Thanh Hoa shot down 47 American aircraft, 31 of which were shot down in the Ham Rong area alone. The American imperialists had to bitterly admit, 'Those were two dark days for the American air force,'' Mr. Anh said."
