There are art programs that are created from songs. But there are also programs that are created from a grand idea to connect those songs into a story.

“Vietnam’s Sea – A Journey to Green Space,” taking place on the evening of June 5th at Binh Minh Square (Cua Lo, Nghe An), is expected to be such a journey, where music is not only enjoyed but also tells stories about Vietnam’s sea, about love for the homeland, about cultural memories and the nation’s aspirations for the future.

The sea has always been present in the lives of the Vietnamese people in a very special way. From stories of the expansion of the South, of fleets of boats braving the waves to set sail, of fishing villages nestled by the sea, to the frontier islands in the middle of the ocean,... the sea is a part of the territory, a part of the consciousness. In the memories of many generations, the sea is the starting point of journeys, the place to return to after the struggle for survival, the space of labor, of love, of dreams, and even the great aspirations of the country. Perhaps that is why every art program about the sea receives special attention from the public. People not only seek beautiful melodies, but also find in them the image of their homeland and themselves.

Set within that emotional context, "Vietnam's Sea - A Journey to Green Space" chooses a rather interesting storytelling approach. The program doesn't begin with the sea, but with its origins.

In the homeland of President Ho Chi Minh , on the occasion of the entire nation commemorating the 136th anniversary of his birth, the opening performance of "He is the unwavering belief in ultimate victory" resonated as a heartfelt tribute, simultaneously opening up a spiritual foundation for the entire journey that followed. From the motherland, from the land of Nghe An, rich in revolutionary traditions, where the soul and aspirations of the young Nguyen Tat Thanh were nurtured before he set out to find a way to save the country at sea, the music led listeners back to the most fundamental values: love of country, faith in the future, and the will to overcome all challenges to reach greater horizons.

From that foundation, the story of the sea unfolds naturally. Before knowing the vast ocean, everyone has a homeland to remember, a place to return to, a motherland to love. Melodies like "Vietnam, Oh!", "In the Distant Islands", "I Love My Homeland's Sea and Islands", and "Far from Shore" are therefore not simply familiar songs about homeland and islands. When placed within the same emotional context, they become different facets of love for the Fatherland. There, we see the image of the country stretching along the East Sea with peaceful countryside and distant islands and archipelagos. There, we see ships still sailing out to sea, soldiers steadfastly guarding the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland, and the innocent voices of children, like a message of the future for the homeland's sea and islands.

Notably, the program avoids using academic concepts or interpretive messages. Instead, the sea is presented primarily through familiar images from everyday life. It is from these simple things that love for the homeland, awareness of preserving the sea and islands, and responsibility towards the environment are naturally evoked.

Leaving behind the emotional realm of origins, the music continues to lead the audience deeper into the inner world of humanity before the ocean. If in the first part, the sea appears as an integral part of the homeland, in the next part, the sea becomes the space of the soul. For generations, the sea has always been an endless source of inspiration for poetry and music because its beauty encompasses all the emotional nuances of humanity. The sea can be gentle like a mother's lullaby, poignant like the longing of a lover, and profound like unspoken secrets.

Therefore, songs like "Lullaby with the Sound of Waves," "The Sea Sings This Afternoon," "The Sea of Nostalgia and You," and "Boat and Sea," when sung amidst the seascape of Cua Lo, are more than just performances. They are like dialogues between humanity and the sea, between memory and the present, between personal emotions and the vast beauty of nature. In the sound of the waves on a summer night, each listener can find a part of their own memory. Some remember their coastal hometowns they haven't returned to for a long time. Some recall their youthful years spent on distant journeys. Some encounter in the lyrics the image of a loved one working day and night at sea. And perhaps, in a certain moment, listeners realize that the sea has long become a part of the Vietnamese soul, just as rivers, village communal houses, and bamboo groves have become enduring cultural symbols of the nation.

But the story that "Vietnam's Sea - A Journey to Green Space" wants to tell doesn't stop at memories or emotions. After moments of poetic silence, the music gradually shifts to a more powerful, expansive rhythm, carrying the breath of life today and the aspirations of tomorrow. The sea is not just a place to remember and cherish. The sea is also a space for survival, a resource for development, and one of the important driving forces for the country to move into the future.

Through performances such as "My Hometown Harbor," "Spring Comes from the Oil Wells," the medley "Sea Songs - Nighttime Sea Songs," and "Vietnam Proudly Steps Towards the Future," a vibrant picture of Vietnam's maritime life emerges. It depicts brightly lit harbors, ships sailing out to sea, proud oil and gas facilities amidst the vast ocean, and coastal economic zones opening up new development opportunities for the country. But interspersed within this modern life are the simple sea songs and folk melodies that have nurtured the souls of countless generations of people in Central Vietnam. The encounter between tradition and modernity, between long-standing cultural values and the aspirations for development today, creates a unique character for the program, reminding us that the journey towards the open sea is not a departure from our roots but a continuation of the values that have persistently flowed in the national cultural heritage.

Overall, the most captivating aspect of "Vietnam's Sea - A Journey to Green Space" perhaps lies in how the program connects multiple layers of meaning within a single artistic journey. From the motherland to the open sea, from memory to the present, from the very personal emotions of individuals to the shared aspirations of the nation, all are linked through the language of music. It is the story of a nation always looking to the sea with love, responsibility, and faith; the story of people who live day and night with the sea, enriching themselves from it and preserving it for future generations; and also the story of "green spaces" being nurtured through the awareness of environmental protection and the preservation of the precious resources that nature has bestowed.

And as the final melodies faded, and fireworks lit up the sky over Cua Lo beach, what lingered in the hearts of the audience was perhaps not just the impression of a beautiful performance or familiar songs. More importantly, it was the feeling of having completed a journey with the Vietnamese sea, from the beginning of cherished memories to the vast horizons of the future, fostering a deeper love for the homeland's sea and renewed faith in the green aspirations being continued on the waves of Vietnam today.
