Warm military-civilian relationship in the flood

(Chinhphu.vn) - In the last days of October, heavy rains poured down on the mountainous communes in the West and South of Da Nang City. Floodwaters rose high, landslides isolated many roads and villages. In the midst of the pouring rain, the image of soldiers of Military Region 5 wading in the rain and floods, steadfastly sticking to the people and their areas... became a solid support for people in flooded areas.

"We must seize every hour and every minute to save people from dangerous areas," said Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Military Region, during an urgent meeting at the Tra My Region 3 Defense Command (Da Nang City Military Command).

Faced with the complicated flood situation, the Military Region Command established a forward command post in the Tra My area, directly commanded by Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa. Upon arriving at the scene, Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa immediately went to each area, directed the forces to urgently deploy many rescue plans for the local people.

At the same time, Military Region 5 mobilized 19 special vehicles and forces of the 270th Engineering Brigade and the 575th Information Brigade to quickly move to the Tra My area, organize the leveling of landslides that caused traffic congestion on National Highway 40B, promptly clearing the route, facilitating access to isolated areas.

Living in the mountainous commune of Tra My for more than 40 years, but never before has Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, a resident of To Dong Truong, Tra My commune, witnessed the scene of the Truong River rising and flowing across the glass bridge "Cao Son Ngoc Que", a symbol of the place. Water flooded all over the area where she lives.

Ms. Ngoc said: "The past two days have been raining heavily, pouring rain, the flood rose very quickly, people couldn't react in time. The soldiers and local authorities evacuated the houses near the mountainside to the school and the commune committee for safety."

In Thanh My area, Da Nang city, on the morning of October 26, as soon as receiving news that 260 households in Pa Duong and Bai Mia villages (Thanh My commune) were isolated due to rising floodwaters, Lieutenant Colonel Briu Xia, Deputy Political Commissar of the Defense Command of Area 2 - Thanh My immediately commanded forces to coordinate with the police and militia of the commune to approach the scene.

Amidst heavy rains and floods, soldiers rushed to each house, carrying the elderly and children across the rushing water to safety. "Some houses were only a few meters away from the stream bank and would have collapsed. If we had been a little slower, the consequences would have been unpredictable. We just hope that the people are safe, and we are used to all the hardships," said Lieutenant Colonel Briu Xia, his voice hoarse from being drenched in the rain for the past few days.

In the flood-prone area of Dai Loc, as of the afternoon of October 27, rising floodwaters had submerged hundreds of households in the area. Mrs. Truong Thi Mai (82 years old), residing in My Nghia village, Dai Loc commune, was isolated in a small house, without any relatives nearby. Upon receiving the news, officers and soldiers of the Defense Command of Region 5 - Dien Ban used rescue boats to cross the rushing water and promptly brought Mrs. Mai out of the danger zone. "When I saw the soldiers arrive, I was so happy that I cried. They said: "Don't worry, we are here!", Mrs. Mai was moved.

The sky is still pouring down torrential rains, the risk of landslides continues to threaten mountainous communes and widespread flooding in lowland communes, but the soldiers of Military Region 5 are still steadfastly holding their ground, tirelessly helping the people.

From Thanh My, Phuoc Thanh, Phuoc Chanh to Dai Loc, Tra My, Ban Thach, Tam Ky... everywhere there are footprints of soldiers of Military Region 5. In the fierce flood, the image of soldiers of Military Region 5 with wet clothes, covered in mud... has become a beautiful symbol of the close relationship between the army and the people, of the quality of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" shining forever in everyday life.
