Heartwarming bond between soldiers and civilians amidst floods.

(Chinhphu.vn) - In late October, heavy rains poured down on the mountainous communes in the western and southern parts of Da Nang City. Rising floodwaters and landslides isolated many roads and villages. Amidst these torrential downpours, the image of soldiers from Military Region 5 braving the rain and floods, steadfastly staying close to the people and the affected areas, became a strong pillar of support for the flood victims.

"We must seize every hour, every minute to rescue people from dangerous areas," said Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Military Region, during an emergency meeting at the Command Headquarters of the 3rd Tra My Defense Zone (Da Nang City Military Command).

Given the complex flood situation, the Military Region Command established a forward command post in the Tra My area, directly commanded by Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa. Upon arriving at the scene, Colonel Nguyen Van Hoa immediately went to each area, directing forces to urgently implement various rescue plans for the local people.

Simultaneously, Military Region 5 deployed 19 specialized vehicles along with forces from the 270th Engineering Brigade and the 575th Communications Brigade to quickly mobilize to the Tra My area, clearing landslides that were blocking traffic on National Highway 40B, promptly reopening the route and facilitating access to isolated areas.

Having lived in the mountainous commune of Tra My for over 40 years, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, a resident of Dong Truong Hamlet, Tra My Commune, had never before witnessed the Truong River surging and overflowing, crossing the "Cao Son Ngoc Que" glass bridge, a symbol of the area. The water flooded her entire neighborhood.

Ms. Ngoc shared: "It's been raining heavily for the past two days, pouring down, and the floodwaters rose very quickly. People couldn't react in time. For houses near the mountainside, the soldiers and local authorities evacuated them to the school and the commune committee for safety."

In Thanh My area, Da Nang City, on the morning of October 26th, upon receiving news that 260 households in Pa Duong and Bai Mia hamlets (Thanh My commune) were isolated due to rising floodwaters, Lieutenant Colonel Briu Xia, Deputy Political Commissar of the Defense Command of Region 2 - Thanh My, immediately commanded forces to coordinate with the police and commune militia to reach the scene.

Amidst heavy rains and floods, soldiers rushed to each house, carrying the elderly and children across the raging waters to safety. "Some houses were only a few meters from the stream bank before collapsing. If we had been a little slower, the consequences would have been unimaginable. We only hope that the people are safe; we are used to all the hardships," said Lieutenant Colonel Bríu Xia, his voice hoarse from being drenched in rain for the past few days.

In the flood-stricken area of Dai Loc, as of the afternoon of October 27th, rising floodwaters submerged hundreds of households. Mrs. Truong Thi Mai (82 years old), residing in My Nghia village, Dai Loc commune, was isolated in her small house with no relatives nearby. Upon receiving the report, officers and soldiers from the Command of Defense Zone 5 - Dien Ban used rescue boats to brave the strong currents and promptly rescued Mrs. Mai from the danger. "Seeing the soldiers arrive, I was so happy I almost cried. They said, 'Don't worry, we're here for you!'" Mrs. Mai said emotionally.

The torrential rains continue to pour down, the risk of landslides persists in mountainous communes, and widespread flooding continues in lowland communes, yet the soldiers of Military Region 5 remain steadfast, diligently helping the people.

From Thanh My, Phuoc Thanh, Phuoc Chanh to Dai Loc, Tra My, Ban Thach, Tam Ky... the footprints of soldiers from Military Region 5 can be found everywhere. During the devastating floods, the image of these soldiers, their clothes soaked and covered in mud, became a beautiful symbol of the close bond between the military and the people, and of the enduring qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" shining brightly in everyday life.
