One of the factors contributing to the high economic efficiency of Mr. Dan's purple butter sapodilla cultivation model is the effective application of techniques to induce off-season flowering and fruiting, allowing for harvesting at times of market scarcity, especially around the Lunar New Year. According to Mr. Dan, purple butter sapodilla is easy to grow, taking about four years from planting to fruiting. However, for sustainable development and high-quality fruit production, growers need to pay attention to raising the embankments, mulching the base of the trees, using organic fertilizers, and pruning branches after each harvest. During cultivation, fertilizers and pesticides must be used in the correct dosage and at the right time; applying double-layer fruit bags (cloth bags and mesh bags) helps to limit pests and fruit flies from affecting quality and yield. Growers should also remember to stop applying fertilizers and pesticides before harvesting to ensure the required waiting period. Using clean irrigation water and prioritizing biological control methods, minimizing the use of pesticides, ensures that star apples are of high quality, delicious, and safe for consumers.
Thanks to adhering to VietGAP standards, the purple butter sapodilla from Mr. Dan's orchard weighs over 500 grams per fruit when harvested, has a deep purple color, thin skin, firm flesh, a sweet and refreshing taste, a buttery aroma, and is free of sticky sap unlike many other sapodilla varieties. With these outstanding advantages, Mr. Dan's family's sapodilla is always in demand from traders and export businesses, who purchase it at a price higher than the market rate.
Not only has he enriched his family, Mr. Dan also participates in the Thoi Hung Fruit Cooperative in Phong Dien commune. He proactively created a Zalo group to share techniques for planting and caring for purple butter sapodilla with the 19 members of the cooperative. Besides enthusiastically sharing his gardening experience, he also plays a key role in connecting with purchasing units and businesses, supporting the guaranteed purchase of the entire sapodilla harvest from the cooperative's members. In addition, Mr. Dan, along with the Cooperative's Board of Directors, organizes staggered harvesting for the farmers, extending from October of the previous year to May of the following year. This helps stabilize production, supply customers and purchasing businesses, and ensure a market for the cooperative's more than 12.9 hectares of sapodilla orchards.
The story of Hứa Huy Dân's success with his purple butter sapodilla trees is a vivid testament to the dynamic spirit of farmers who dare to think, dare to act, boldly apply science and technology, and engage in sustainable production linkages. Through his flexible and innovative farming approach, Dân not only increases the value of his land but also contributes to spreading the spirit of cooperation and joint development of agricultural economy right in his hometown.
