Peaceful old age

- Cherishing health, pursuing hobbies, and creating joy for themselves are positive changes among many elderly people today. These changes motivate them to further develop their potential and bring more laughter into their lives.

To prevent old age from becoming boring.

Although she turns 78 this year, Mrs. Dao Thi Dao, from Group 2, Phan Thiet Ward (Tuyen Quang City), finds old age far from dull; on the contrary, it is always filled with joy. Every day, after preparing meals and cleaning the house, she actively participates in activities for the elderly and the neighborhood, especially cultural, artistic, and sports activities, making her life more joyful and meaningful.

Ms. Dao Thi Dao (standing first on the right) from Phan Thiet ward ( Tuyen Quang city) is happy and content with regularly practicing Tai Chi with the Tai Chi Club.

Ms. Dao shared: “I retired a long time ago, and staying indoors all the time could easily lead to illness, and my memory and health would decline. Not only young people, but also the elderly have many joys and hobbies of their own. Therefore, I often make appointments to socialize with friends who share similar interests and regularly participate in Tai Chi exercises. Thanks to this, I find life always cheerful and not as boring as it was when I first retired.”

On her personal Facebook page, Ms. Trieu Thi Luu (65 years old), from Nang Kha commune (Na Hang district), regularly posts about her recreational activities and shares her positive and happy feelings. To improve her mental well-being, Ms. Luu also initiates movements to practice folk dancing and play recreational volleyball, creating a playground for the elderly.

Despite suffering from many ailments common in old age, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Toan, from Yen Phu commune (Ham Yen district), maintains an optimistic and positive lifestyle. She is always conscious of her health, proactively exercising by walking daily, tending to her plants around the house, and finding joy each day by regularly meeting with other elderly people in the village for conversations. “After a lifetime of worry and hard work raising my children until they are settled, now is the time for me to rest, enjoy myself, and focus more on my health. When I am happier and healthier, my children and grandchildren can work with peace of mind,” Mrs. Toan shared.

Regular exercise helps older adults live happier and healthier lives.

Accompanying the elderly

One of the greatest joys of old age is peace and tranquility. After years of striving and worrying about career, family, and children, this is the time when older people can set aside their burdens, slow down, and enjoy each moment. No longer under work pressure, no longer racing against time, they can leisurely enjoy a morning cup of tea, read a good book, spend time with their children and grandchildren, or simply admire their small, thriving garden.

Ms. Bui Thi Hong Sinh, from Group 17, Phan Thiet Ward, shared: "Every day I regularly take care of and keep my parents company, as my siblings all work far from home." Ms. Sinh expressed that her father is 90 years old this year, and her mother is 86. She always feels fortunate to still have her parents by her side. Therefore, every day, along with taking care of their physical well-being, she always spends time asking about and chatting with her parents, so that they don't feel lonely in their old age. For a child, nothing is happier than seeing their parents happy, smiling, and in good health.

At 80 years old, Mr. Phan Van Thang, from Xuan Quang commune (Chiem Hoa district), is experiencing declining health and difficulty walking. To keep him from feeling lonely and to help him forget his aches and pains, his children take turns bringing him back to his hometown on weekends to visit relatives and his old friends. "Each time we go, we see him getting healthier and more cheerful, and we're so happy. Old people sometimes don't express what they want or need. Therefore, as his children, we always put ourselves in his shoes, understanding his wishes so that he feels the care of his children and grandchildren, and so that he is happier," said Ms. Phan Thi Thoa, his daughter.

The joy of old age doesn't come naturally; it's the result of a process of cultivation and accumulation from life experiences, from tolerance and an open heart. It's a time to reap the sweet fruits of life's garden, a time to be grateful for what one has, and to continue enjoying simple, peaceful things with family and loved ones.
