To assess the impact of eating or skipping breakfast on health, researchers focused on metabolic syndrome, which is the root cause of many modern diseases and a growing burden on public health worldwide . This syndrome comprises four main components: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood lipids, and abdominal fat.
Researchers from the Department of Public Health , Ningxia Medical University, and the Ningxia Laboratory for Environmental Factors and Chronic Disease Control (China) conducted a meta-analysis to find the link between skipping breakfast and the risk of metabolic syndrome with key components: abdominal fat, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol.
The review included nine studies with over 118,000 participants.
Results from the meta-analysis show that skipping breakfast significantly increases the risk of metabolic syndrome and its components.
Specifically, as follows:
- Increased risk of metabolic syndrome by 10%.
- Increased abdominal fat percentage by 17%.
- Increased risk of hypertension by 21%.
- Increased risk of high blood cholesterol by 13%.
- According to the medical news website News Medical, there is a 26% increased risk of elevated blood sugar levels.
Researchers have revealed that people who skip breakfast are more likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome and its key components: abdominal fat, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol. This underscores the power of breakfast for long-term health, especially in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome.
