According to the People's Army newspaper, People's Army Hero Nguyen Van Coc - a legendary pilot of Vietnam with a record achievement of shooting down 9 American planes, supporting teammates and commanding the shooting down of 9 other planes.
Hero Nguyen Van Coc was born in 1943, in Bich Son commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province.
In 1961, while in 8th grade, he passed the pilot training exam. After being sent to study in the Soviet Union, he returned home, as one of 17 MiG-17 pilots out of a total of 23 pilots, fighting in the Red Star Air Force Regiment.
On April 30, 1967, as pilot No. 2, Nguyen Van Coc shot down the first F-105 after the squadron leader destroyed another. According to the old tactic, No. 2 only had a support mission, but he improved it by actively attacking, increasing the squadron's efficiency. Thanks to that, a MiG-21 squadron could shoot down up to 3 planes instead of the maximum of 2.
With this flexible fighting style, he was called "Peregrine 2" and in 1967 alone, he shot down 6 planes - mostly in the 2nd position. This tactic was then popularized in training. Out of a total of 9 planes, 6 were shot down in the 2nd position. From then on, the improved tactic was introduced into training and brought good results.
