Previously, Apple had also sent similar notifications to targets and victims of spyware, and instructed them to contact a non-profit organization that investigates such cyberattacks.
As of April 30th, two people have revealed they received notifications from Apple, one of them being Ciro Pellergrino, an Italian journalist working for the news site Fanpage. According to the message from the iPhone manufacturer, Pellergrino was not the only target of the spyware.
"Today's announcement has been sent to affected users in 100 countries," the message read. "This is not a joke," Pellegrino shared.

The second person to reveal their identity was Eva Vlaardingerbroek, a Dutch right-wing activist. A screenshot posted by Vlaardingerbroek on the social media platform X read: “Apple has detected a spyware attack targeting your iPhone. This attack is likely targeting you because of who you are or what you do… Please take this seriously.”
It's unclear which surveillance campaign this Apple notification refers to. Last year, users in dozens of countries also received notifications about the iPhone manufacturer's spyware.
According to TechCrunch , Pellegrino is the second Italian journalist to receive a warning this year. Previously, in February 2025, WhatsApp informed his colleague Francesco Cancellato on Facebook that the company had blocked the activity of a spyware company that they believed had attacked his device.
In Cancellato's case, WhatsApp stated that the spyware was created by Paragon Solutions – an Israeli company. After Cancellato revealed the incident, two other Italians also came forward, claiming they too had been victims of Paragon.
