Apple persists in developing foldable iPhone and iPad

According to 9to5Mac , Apple is still persistent with the foldable iPhone design. The company has been researching foldable iPhones since 2018 and currently has at least two working prototypes of clamshell folding models.

The new foldable iPhone is said to be in the early stages of development, so the device won't be available to the public anytime soon. The report also says Apple has run into challenges with its foldable iPhone project and is working on a larger foldable iPad.

Apple is still working hard on the project of launching foldable screen devices.

The report claims that Apple's design team wanted to create a device that was half as thin as current iPhone models, so that when folded, the phone wouldn't be as thick. They also explored adding an outward-facing display for use when the iPhone is folded. However, the realities of components like batteries and displays made it difficult for the engineering team to achieve these lofty goals.

The Information reports that Apple has shelved its foldable iPhone project in 2020 and is instead focusing on a horizontally folding iPad that would be about the size of an iPad mini, with a screen of around 8 inches. Compared to phones, foldable iPads have less stringent durability requirements and can also be thicker in design.

Apple is reportedly working on ways to minimize the crease in the middle of the display that appears after multiple folds. The company wants the device to be completely flat, allowing users to interact with the screen using accessories like the Apple Pencil.

It’s unclear whether Apple has successfully addressed these issues. But at least for the iPhone 16 and 17, Apple won’t be releasing a foldable iPhone. A few years ago, Apple was said to be planning a foldable iPhone for 2025, but that timeline appears to have been delayed.
