What are those three mysterious dots on the iPad for?

If you own a recent generation iPad, you may have noticed three dots on the back or side of the device.

This is a distinctive feature of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and basic iPad models, but not the iPad mini. Called the Smart Connector, these dots were first introduced by Apple in 2015 with the launch of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The Smart Connector allows the iPad to instantly connect to keyboard accessories without needing separate charging, power on/off, or Bluetooth pairing. This eliminates two major problems: no need to worry about charging the keyboard and instant data transfer when the keyboard is attached to the iPad.

Keyboard accessories compatible with the Smart Connector must have a three-pin connector. According to Apple, these three dots contain magnets that help secure the accessory.

These iPad models support the Smart Connector.

The iPad Pro was Apple's first product line to feature a Smart Connector. All iPad Pro models released after 2015 have this feature. In 2019, Apple also added Smart Keyboard support to the iPad Air (third generation) and subsequent models. The basic iPad model also began supporting the Smart Keyboard in 2019, with the Smart Connector points located on the side.

However, the iPad mini remains the only model without a Smart Connector. Users of this iPad currently have to use Bluetooth to pair the keyboard, which means the keyboard must be charged via cable.

Users can still use Bluetooth keyboards with iPads that support the Smart Connector.

Smart Connector compatible accessories

Accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Magic Keyboard Folio, developed by Apple for the iPad Pro and iPad Air, utilize the Smart Connector. Additionally, third-party manufacturers like Logitech offer keyboards compatible with the Smart Connector, providing instant connectivity without the need for batteries.

iPad users are not limited to Smart Connector accessories; they can also choose Bluetooth keyboards for any iPad model, however, these will require charging and manual pairing.
