Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal could go over their transfer budget to sign a striker. |
In an interview before the match against Newcastle in round 37 of the Premier League, Arteta humorously compared the transfer budget to organizing a wedding or building a house.
“You plan a wedding with your wife and you set a budget, but the costs always go over budget. Building a house is the same, it always costs more. We prepare for different scenarios, but there are always unexpected variables,” said the Spaniard.
Arteta said the search for a new striker was at the top of the priority list for sporting director Andrea Berta, who took on the role to replace Edu in March.
The Arsenal boss also stressed that the club has a clear plan of what needs to be improved and the priorities, but implementation depends on many factors: "Obviously, we always consider breaking the transfer budget to get what we need. If that is what the team needs to conquer the titles."
European media revealed that Arsenal's two top targets are currently striker Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon and Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig.
The Gunners are also interested in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Gyokeres is valued at around £60m, while Sesko could cost Arsenal no less than £70m.
