The first earthquake, at 4:08 AM, had a magnitude of 3.1. Approximately two minutes later, another earthquake of magnitude 3 occurred; the third at 4:46 AM measured 2.6. All three earthquakes were at a depth of approximately 8.1 km.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), stated that Kon Tum is located within a series of triggered earthquakes and in a weak earthquake zone. Therefore, the maximum tremor in the area does not exceed 5.5 magnitude. Observations suggest that the cause of this phenomenon is related to triggered earthquakes caused by the reservoir.

Accordingly, when hydroelectric power plants operate, they increase pressure on the ground, leading to landslides and earthquakes. In March 2021, after the Thuong Kon Tum power plant in Kon Plong district began impounding water for electricity generation, tremors increased dramatically in the area.
Statistics show that over the 117 years from 1903 to 2020, Kon Plông district recorded approximately 33 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher. However, from 2021 to the present, more than 200 earthquakes have occurred here. The largest one took place in August 2022, with tremors measuring 4.7 magnitude. At that time, people in several provinces and cities hundreds of kilometers away from Kon Plông felt the shaking, and objects fell to the ground.
