In Thanh Hoa province, three children aged 11-14 were swept away by waves and drowned while swimming at the beach in Hai Ninh commune, Nghi Son town, while swimming with their maternal grandfather.
On the afternoon of June 11th, Mr. Mai Viet Tu (62 years old, residing in Thanh Thuy commune, Nghi Son town) used his motorbike to take his four grandchildren to the beach in Hai Ninh commune for a swim. Around 3 PM, Mr. Tu brought the youngest grandchild ashore, leaving the other three to play in the sea.
A short while later, when he returned, all three children—two siblings, Vu Thi Anh Duong, 14, and Vu Quoc Uy, 12—and Hoang Mai Tuong Vi, 11, had been swept away by the waves.
Local authorities mobilized border guards, police, and militia to search for many hours. At dusk, the children's bodies were found more than 500 meters from the accident site. "The waves weren't big this afternoon, but it's possible the children strayed too far from shore and were swept away by the current," said Mr. Le Dinh Phuong, Chairman of Hai Ninh Ward.
The victim's body has now been handed over to the family for burial.
