In September 2025, Bac Kan will merge with Thai Nguyen province, concluding a 28-year journey of construction and development. This marks a new beginning for a restructuring phase and the expectation of reaching greater heights, building upon the foundations laid with dedication and perseverance amidst hardship.
At conferences and seminars on mergers, the leaders of Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen provinces agreed on the following viewpoint: Merger is not about "the new overwhelming the old," but about jointly preserving what is good, renewing each other to move forward; there is no favoritism or disadvantage, only complementarity, inheritance, and development.
With its strengths in forests, medicinal plants, ecotourism , and indigenous culture, Bac Kan will play the role of the "ecological-cultural core" in the northern part of the newly established province. Natural forests account for nearly 70% of its area, along with a unique ecosystem, biodiversity conservation areas, and abundant indigenous resources – advantages rarely found elsewhere. Therefore, Bac Kan will become the "green lung" not only for Thai Nguyen but also for the entire Northern Midlands and mountainous region.
Upon consolidation, Bac Kan will no longer be an "independent province" in development planning, but rather a crucial link in a unified development axis, creating more room to boost socio-economic development. This restructuring will optimize inter-provincial infrastructure planning and resource allocation, complete a comprehensive regional transportation system, and overcome transportation obstacles in mountainous and highland areas.
In the near future, after reunification, a new development space will open up, combining the industrial and urban strengths of Thai Nguyen with the abundant natural resources, ecological potential, and labor force of Bac Kan. Combining these strengths will create synergy, promoting comprehensive development and better exploiting the unique potential of each locality.
This is not just an economic opportunity, but also a promise to the people: Children in Bac Kan will grow up with more opportunities than their parents ever had. Young people in Bac Kan will not need to leave their hometowns far away to make a living. And the people of Bac Kan will no longer be left behind by major development trends.
“Ba Be Lake is affectionately called a ‘green gem’ amidst the vast forests of Viet Bac. However, due to various reasons, including limited resources, tourism in Ba Be has not yet developed to its full potential and advantages. Therefore, after the provincial merger, we hope to have sufficient resources and strong policies to make this ‘green gem’ shine, especially as the transportation infrastructure connecting Ba Be Lake with other localities is gradually being improved,” said Mr. Hoang Ngoc Tham, Director of the Ba Be Tourist Area Management Board, expressing his confidence.
Bac Kan is not just an administrative place. It is a region of memory, an identity, a living spirit distilled through nature, people, history, and culture. These values are not lost in the process of unification; on the contrary, they will merge into a larger, deeper flow.
Consolidation is an essential requirement in the context of streamlining the administrative apparatus, helping state agencies operate more efficiently and effectively. Everything that Bac Kan has built over the past 28 years is a valuable foundation, a legacy that will continue to be inherited and developed in the new administrative unit.
These achievements did not come about naturally, nor can they be forgotten in any administrative process. The most important thing that Bac Kan leaves behind is not a name, but a steadfast belief: Belief in itself, in the people of this place – kind, compassionate, full of dignity, creative, and persistently striving for progress.
Wherever it is, under whatever name, Bac Kan remains a land to be remembered and cherished. The land and people of Bac Kan will continue to write new chapters of history with their character, faith, resilience, and aspiration for progress, as they have done for the past 28 years.
