The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced an update to the TOEFL iBT test model, content, and scoring scale. Accordingly, starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT will adopt a new, internationally standardized scoring scale, shifting from the current 0-120 point scale to a 1-6 scale. This scale corresponds to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This change is intended to help test-takers and schools around the world more easily compare results against existing common assessment standards, while also simplifying the process of determining academic English proficiency.
During the first two years of the transition period, TOEFL iBT score reports will display both the 1-6 and 0-120 scale simultaneously. After this period, the score report will only use the 1-6 scale.
Furthermore, starting in January 2026, the exam will adjust its question set to reflect the actual abilities of candidates during the test, applicable to the Reading and Listening sections. This model helps to more accurately assess English usage in an academic environment through simulated activities such as group discussions, presenting viewpoints, and processing academic information.
The exam content will also be updated with modern, international topics that are more accessible to learners from all cultural backgrounds. In addition, the time to receive scores will be shortened. Candidates will receive their results within 72 hours or sooner.
The TOEFL iBT is an exam designed and developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the United States. It is specifically for non-native English speakers, aiming to comprehensively assess English proficiency across four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an academic setting. In Vietnam, the exam is administered by IIG Vietnam.
