The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has just announced an update to the test model, content, and scoring scale of the TOEFL iBT test. Accordingly, from January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT test will apply a new international standard scoring scale, switching from the current 0-120 scale to a 1-6 scale. This scale corresponds to 6 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This change is said to help candidates and schools around the world easily compare results with current popular assessment standards, while simplifying the determination of academic English proficiency.
During the first two years of transition, TOEFL iBT score reports will display both the 1 – 6 and 0 – 120 scales. After this time, score reports will only use the 1 – 6 scale.
In addition, from January 2026, the test will adjust the question set according to the actual ability of the candidates during the test, applied to the Reading and Listening sections. This model helps to assess more closely the use of English in the learning environment, through tasks that simulate activities such as group discussions, presenting opinions and processing academic information.
The test content will also be refreshed with more contemporary, international topics that are more accessible to learners from all cultural backgrounds. In addition, the time for returning scores will be shortened. Candidates will receive results within 72 hours or less.
TOEFL iBT is a test designed and developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test is designed specifically for people who use English as a foreign language to assess their ability to use English comprehensively in 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing in an academic environment. In Vietnam, the test is authorized to be implemented by IIG Vietnam.
