In the first few months of 2023, live pig prices dropped to 50,000-52,000 VND/kg, and in some places even hit a low of 49,000 VND/kg - a level that caused many farmers to suffer losses because the price of animal feed increased and remained high.
It wasn't until May 2023 that the average price reached 55,300 VND/kg, and it increased to 59,000 VND/kg in June 2023.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, the fact that farmers had to sell live pigs at prices lower than the production cost from January to May 2023 had a strong impact on the growth rate of the country's pig herd.
In the second half of 2023, live pig prices continued to be volatile. The highest price recorded was 63,000 VND/kg in June, while the lowest was 49,000 VND/kg in December.
In the first six months of this year, live pig prices recovered, rising from 52,500 VND/kg to 68,500 VND/kg. In some localities, prices even exceeded 70,000 VND/kg on certain days.
Notably, since March 2023, animal feed prices have started to trend downwards, leading to a decrease in pig farming costs. Combined with the increase in live pig prices since February of this year, farmers are reaping significant profits after a long period of heavy losses.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in 2023, Vietnam imported 716,890 tons of meat and meat products, worth US$1.43 billion. Among the various product categories... Imported meat, fresh or frozen pork, accounts for the majority.
