After increasing by 1,000 VND/kg, Lao Cai, Lai Chau and Dien Bien are now purchasing at 58,000 VND/kg. Ninh Binh is the only locality that still maintains the price at 59,000 VND/kg, unchanged from the previous day.

Pig price in Central Highlands

In the Central Highlands region, pork prices continued to increase, fluctuating between 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg, with common transaction prices ranging from 57,000 - 59,000 VND/kg.

Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Ngai and Gia Lai provinces all recorded a sharp increase of VND2,000/kg. Accordingly, Quang Tri, Hue and Gia Lai reached VND57,000/kg, while Da Nang and Quang Ngai rose to VND58,000/kg.

In Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, the increase of 1,000 VND/kg helped the price reach 59,000 VND/kg. The localities of Ha Tinh, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong also increased by 1,000 VND/kg, in which Ha Tinh and Lam Dong are currently at 58,000 VND/kg, while Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa remain at 57,000 VND/kg.

Southern pig price

The Southern market today witnessed a relatively even increase, with purchase prices ranging from 55,000 - 58,000 VND/kg.

In Dong Nai, Tay Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City, the price of live pigs increased by 1,000 VND/kg, reaching 58,000 VND/kg. The transaction price in An Giang remained at 55,000 VND/kg, while in Ca Mau, Vinh Long and Can Tho, the price increased slightly to 56,000 VND/kg. In Dong Thap, the price remained at 56,000 VND/kg compared to the previous day.

According to records, the rapid increase in live pig prices in the North in the first week of December mainly came from high consumption demand, signs of slowing supply and tightening of transport control between localities to prevent the disease from returning.

Traders said that the demand for healthy pigs has increased sharply while many farming areas have been affected by floods, causing the number of qualified pigs to decrease, thereby pushing prices up.

In addition, demand for storage and processing for year-end service is expected to continue to push the market up in the coming weeks.

Risk of disease return

Along with the price increase trend, many localities are currently facing the risk of African swine fever (ASF) re-emergence. In Hai Phong, after detecting an outbreak in Nam Do Son ward, authorities have urgently deployed the highest level of prevention measures.

The People's Committee of Nam Do Son Ward has destroyed all infected pigs, dead pigs and individuals with positive results, strictly following the process of handling sick animals to avoid spreading pathogens through water sources and the environment.

Disinfection activities are carried out continuously, spraying disinfectants daily for the first 7 days and maintaining twice a week for the next 3 weeks. Animal quarantine checkpoints are set up and on duty 24/7 to strictly control the transportation of pigs and pig products in and out of the epidemic area.

In addition, the government has requested a temporary halt to herd restoration and increased monitoring of pig herds in threatened and buffer zones to prevent the spread of the disease. Information on the disease situation has also been widely disseminated to raise people's awareness of prevention during the year-end period.
