According to information from the Sun World Fansipan Legend Tourist Area Management Board, due to the influence of a cold front with temperatures dropping below -3 degrees Celsius, frost appeared on the summit of Fansipan, 3,143 meters high, in Sa Pa town, Lao Cai province, from 5:30 AM on January 5th, creating a beautiful scene as ice covered tree branches and grass.

This is the first frost to appear on Fansipan mountain in the early days of 2025.

From the night of January 4th to the morning of January 5th, temperatures at the summit of Fansipan fluctuated between -1°C and 0°C, causing water vapor to condense and form a thick layer of ice covering the wooden floor of the Fansipan monument area, walkways, railings, and trees and grass on the mountaintop at altitudes of 3,000 meters and above. As of 8:30 AM this morning, the ice remains thick and shows little sign of melting.

Frost is a phenomenon where water vapor rises, encounters cold air at the surface, and condenses into tiny ice crystals. Frost usually occurs from the end of November to the first half of February of the following year, but is most prevalent in December and January. However, in high mountainous areas above 2,000 meters, in the eastern part of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, some years the cold is so severe and prolonged that frost can still occur until the end of February or the beginning of March.

Regarding its formation, frost occurs when the ground temperature drops to 0 degrees Celsius, while the air temperature remains above 0 degrees Celsius.

Frost is the phenomenon that occurs on a cold night when a layer of ice forms on the surface of puddles or containers of water left outdoors.

Frost typically forms around midnight or early morning, when the ground is at its coldest. Water vapor in the air near the ground, in contact with the cold surface, cools rapidly, condenses, and crystallizes.

Favorable conditions for frost formation include clear to partly cloudy skies at night, light or calm winds leading to high ground heat radiation. During the day, frost usually occurs after nightfall and persists until 7-8 a.m. the following day, or even 8-9 a.m. in higher areas. It only melts completely when the sun rises higher.
