Ensuring safety at quarries during the rainy and stormy season.

The 2026 rainy season poses numerous challenges to mineral exploitation activities in Thai Nguyen province, especially at stone quarries. In fact, several incidents have already occurred at these mines, causing property damage and posing potential dangers to workers and the surrounding environment. Therefore, proactive prevention and tightening safety measures are being prioritized by relevant authorities, agencies, and businesses.

Currently, there are dozens of active stone quarries in the province, concentrated in the communes of Dong Hy, Quang Son, La Hien, Yen Trach, Cam Giang, etc. A common characteristic of these quarries is their location in hilly and mountainous areas with steep slopes. When heavy and prolonged rain occurs, water seeps deep into the soil and rock layers, reducing their cohesion and easily causing landslides.

In the early months of 2026, several mines experienced landslides, with rocks and soil sliding down from above into the mining area. Specifically, the Na Ca quarry landslide in Cam Giang commune, caused by heavy rain on the night of April 19th, resulted in hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of soil and rock sliding down from above. Although there were no casualties, the landslide damaged machinery, disrupted production, and caused anxiety among workers. This incident served as a warning to quarry operators regarding safety measures during the rainy season.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hong, Director of Dong Phu quarry (Quang Son commune), said: "This year's rainy season came early and the rainfall was heavier than in previous years. At times, we had to temporarily suspend mining due to the very high risk of landslides. The safety of our workers is always our top priority. We implement all measures to ensure maximum safety during mining operations."

With the start of the rainy season, many stone quarries in the province are facing the risk of landslides, causing workplace safety hazards.
With the start of the rainy season, many stone quarries in the province face the risk of landslides, posing a safety hazard to workers.

Faced with the increasing risk of accidents, many quarrying businesses have proactively implemented preventive measures. Regular inspections, slope reinforcement, drainage ditch creation, and shielding of landslide-prone areas are being carried out. Mr. Ha Thuc Ngu Binh, Director of Minh Hien quarry (Quang Son commune), said: "We have invested in an additional drainage system, regularly check the stability of the mining layers, and when there is heavy rain, the company resolutely stops operations."

In addition, occupational safety training has been strengthened. Workers are taught skills to identify risks and how to handle situations when landslides occur. Personal protective equipment such as helmets, shoes, and reflective vests are fully provided. Many units also apply technology in monitoring, such as installing cameras and landslide warning devices, helping to detect early signs of abnormalities… This is a practical solution that contributes to minimizing risks in complex weather conditions.

Not only businesses, but also local authorities are actively involved in ensuring safety at quarries. Inter-agency inspection teams regularly review and require mining units to strictly comply with regulations on labor safety and environmental protection.

Mr. Do Duy Hung, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of La Hien Commune, said: "We are intensifying inspections, especially during the rainy and stormy season. If any mine is found to be unsafe, we will immediately order it to cease operations for remediation. At the same time, the local authorities are also raising public awareness to prevent people from entering dangerous areas. In addition, the local government is coordinating with businesses to develop disaster prevention plans and be ready to respond when incidents occur. Timely information on weather conditions and warnings of heavy rain helps mines be more proactive in production."

In reality, under extreme weather conditions, any negligence can lead to serious consequences. Therefore, ensuring safety at quarries is not only the responsibility of the businesses but also a mandatory requirement. Experts believe that to minimize risks, it is necessary to continue reviewing mining plans and restrict licensing in areas with a high risk of landslides. At the same time, it is crucial to strengthen the application of science and technology, and improve forecasting and early warning capabilities. For workers, adherence to safety procedures is key; workers need to proactively protect themselves and avoid working when conditions are unsafe.

Thanks to the proactive efforts of businesses, the involvement of the government, and the awareness of workers, safety at quarries in Thai Nguyen is gradually improving. This forms the foundation for stable development of mineral exploitation, minimizing unnecessary losses.
