"Mr. Quan, I just saw some Fanpage from Bac Giang posting nonsense about the origin of lychees and the original lychee tree," Mrs. Minh, the tea vendor at the beginning of the street, showed Mr. Quan her phone.
Mr. Quan, a former district cultural official, is now retired and enjoying his lychee orchard, squinting at a photograph of the "ancestral lychee tree" accompanied by the caption: "Bac Giang has an ancestral lychee tree hundreds of years old."
"Good heavens, that's clearly a lychee tree from Thanh Son commune, Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province, my hometown!" Mr. Quan exclaimed loudly, his voice filled with indignation.
He added:
- The original lychee tree in my hometown is famous; I've taken countless journalists there to film and take photos. How can you now associate it with Bac Giang?
"It looks familiar to me too," Tùng, a student on summer break, said while browsing the internet.
"Look, I even found the original photo from the article in our provincial newspaper last year. The angle, the tree branch, the stone sign are exactly the same," Tung added.
Mrs. Mai asked with concern:
Why would they do that?
Mr. Quan's voice softened:
- That Fanpage probably just wants to get views and increase comments. But I think that method is wrong. It's fine for knowledgeable people, but young people who don't know might misunderstand and misinterpret the origins of the ancestral lychee tree. Our ancestral lychee tree has been famous for a long time. It's also a heritage tree, a source of pride for the people in the lychee-growing region. The province is organizing many trade and tourism promotion activities, and many tourists have already visited the ancestral lychee tree. Disseminating information like this is not good at all.
After hearing Mr. Quan's suggestion, Tung volunteered to share his idea:
- I'll send a private message to that Fanpage later. I'll ask them to verify the information and remove the post if it's inaccurate. Even though I know many social media pages exploit the system to gain views and likes, people in my hometown have a right to speak up when they know something is wrong.
- Yes, you're right. Your technological expertise can help our fellow villagers protect the brand of lychee, a famous local specialty. The reputation of the original lychee tree needs to be preserved and protected.
